Swim
Comments: I don't know how I could lose about 30 seconds in swim pace from Lavaman. My training distances were identical to what I'd done the month prior and my times in training had actually improved. Looking over the results, the fastest swimmer overall was only at a 1:31 pace (John Flanagan - 1:14 pace at 2008 IM-Hawaii). Maybe it was a strong current, but I just can't be sure. I sighted well and managed to pick up a couple people to draft off. I feel like I pushed hard enough the first couple hundred. Didn't feel any slower the rest of the swim. What would you do differently?: Can't think of anything except to keep working on my swim efficiency. Transition 1
Comments: An okay transition. Was a bit of a run in from the swim and from bike out to the mount zone. What would you do differently?: Practice swim/bike transition more. Bike
Comments: Crashed into another racer after going over a speed bump. He went down and I tried to avoid but went over his rear wheel. Got some road rash and hurt my left hip and leg. I lost about 3 to 4 minutes getting myself sorted out and back to a racing mindset. Had to adjust the rear brake and put the chain back on the ring and into the right gear after the crash. Rest of the ride was uneventful except for irritation from my crash injuries. I was disappointed in my pace going up the only hill to the turnaround point. What would you do differently?: Better crash avoidance. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition for me. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Was happy with getting my helmet and bike shoes off. Happy with how I got my socks, shoes, and cap on. Run
Comments: Disappointed with how I started the run, but happy with how I finished. For the first mile, I just couldn't seem to get my legs under me and had to walk on the uphill sections a few times. After that mile, my legs felt better and I was able to keep a consistent pace without feeling like I had pushed myself too hard. What would you do differently?: Should have walked for the first minute or two coming out of transition to get my legs sorted out. Run more in training. Post race
Warm down: Had a couple bananas and some gatorade and water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being a BOP swimmer and runner. Need to improve those legs if I want to match my normally strongest leg--the bike. Crash at beginning of bike and the injuries it caused cost me time. Event comments: Except for my crash at the bike start, I enjoyed the race and will probably make this one of my B-races in the future. Last updated: 2009-04-19 12:00 AM

Had a cup of coffee and a couple bagels with peanut butter. Drove to race venue.
Did some light stretches and set up my gear. Had a gel and about 8 ounces of water 45 minutes before race start.
