Swim
Comments: I felt real good in the swim. Being my first Tri ever, I focused on staying calm and my fundamentals and then just put the effort behind it. I did not have too many great swim workouts before hand, but I knew what my times were and what they should be and I finished strong and well within my expectations. What would you do differently?: I think I will have to build more endurance in order to do longer sprints in my workouts in order to go faster with a shorter distance in the water. As long as you can make it to your bike, you will recoup there. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was a costly one. I had issues with my right shoe Yankz. My thumb was saturated from the swim and to pliable to be able to grab my lace and tighten up my shoe. I snapped out of it when I heard a lady who was watching me say, "oh my God what happened to him, he was doing so well?" I got up and just decided I would get to the bike with out a tight right shoe. I put on my socks and running shoes at T1. What would you do differently?: Learn to have a bike with biking shoes already clipped in. That way I can ditch the swim wear and just jump on the bike and go. The guy who finished 1st overall had a T1 time of 21 sec.!! So, I know that it was possible. Bike
Comments: Frustrating, I knew I was going to struggle on the MT bike, and I did not feel good about my ride at all. Very disappointing for me, knowing that I could have competed for the lack of equipment. What would you do differently?: I need a real bike and I need to train harder. I should not have struggled that hard. I had to work to hard to get what I got out of my bike...sub 20mph is not acceptable. Transition 2
Comments: Much improved. T2 went about how I planned it.I need to practice this more. I could have taken off my gloves ahead of time and saved myself 5 -10 seconds. Otherwise a good transition. First time ever.... What would you do differently?: Not too much. Run
Comments: Water stations killed me. Out of T2, I asked for H2O and got a mouth full of Heed. This left me having to flirt with a side cramp for the first half of the run. The last water station before the last climb to the finish, NO WATER, only Heed! Otherwise, I ran well, could have run a little stronger. It was a bit warmer out than expected. What would you do differently?: Train on hills harder. I have not run outdoors and on hills enough before this race. I am going to bring my own water on a belt or something for every race. I had a small 5oz bottle I was going to run with and I wish I had. I drove the course, saw the water stations and planned my run ahead of time. I guess you cannot rely to heavily on having an "exact" plan, because small things will always come up. Post race
Warm down: Nothing much, grabbed a self made Heed Recoverlite. I got a rub down and hit the showers, with minimal stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: T1 was a disaster which ties into having the right equipment for the bike. Having a descent road bike could have saved me maybe 5 min. ?? on the biek, which could have brought me within top 10. Last, bring my own water on the run no matter what, do not rely on just the water tables. Event comments: It was a great race, not sure if I would do it again, except that it is a good early tune up. The water stations need to be uniformed, with both water and Heed at ALL stations. Not having water at the last station really pissed me off, not acceptable. Otherwise, the people were quite friendly, volunteers were ample and teh race was a lot of fun Last updated: 2009-04-20 12:00 AM
