Pre-race routine:

Had to wait for QCOM and EBAY earnings conference call so I was running late. Stopped off at Jim's apartment to change and then walked to the start.
Event warmup:

It was 90 degrees and humid; I was plenty warm.

Comments:

This was an actual race. I was running with a friend from work. He and I are a bit competitive so we decided to race. We ran shoulder to shoulder the whole way. Mile 4 was slow b/c we were running up a hill and playing the cat/mouse game Tour de France riders play trying to see how much energy each had left. I picked it up but he stayed with me so I slowed back down again. At the 4 mile marker I picked it up again. He has a better kick than I so I had to do something. I picked it up with 300m to go and started to pull away but he caught me with 100m and I lost by about 4 seconds. Considering the heat, humidity, and hilly Central Park course I was generally pleased.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I need to work on the mental aspects of "racing". I think I could have picked it up at the 3 mile marker and maintained that pace if I was more mentally prepared to suffer.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, Propel, and a banana while we walked back to the concert area. Stretched a bit as the right hamstring was a bit tight. Nothing to worry about.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of speed training. I've been focusing on the bike and swimming to the detriment of my running.

Event comments:

This is my second Run Hit Wonder Race and it's a great event. 10,000 runners in Central Park. This year was a 5 mile run instead of a 10k and the format worked much better. Very well organized and the bands were great. Joan Jett and Fountains of Wayne were my favorites.

I was generally pleased with the run. Still have to work on pacing as I had a bit left over, but not much. A definate improvement from previous runs.
