Swim
Comments: Fastest AG swim of the day, beat by two elites. I was out good with one dude on each shoulder, but pulled away from them after about 100m. Approaching th efirst buoy, I was feeling it in my shoulders, part because of the full suit and part because I was going pretty hard and haven't been swimming much. Being first to th ebuoy is nice...no battling. Rounded it and never saw another blue cap. Got around the next buoy and now my shoulders were loosening up. Kicked it in, caught a dude in from the elite wave that started 3 minutes in front of me and hit th edock first age grouper by 15 seconds. What would you do differently?: Swim more. Transition 1
Comments: Loooooooong run around the park to T1. Running, I pulled the top of my suit down and then pulled over to the side and stripped the suit th erest of the way off. Much faster than waiting until I get to my bike, caus ethe water's still in the suit which makes it come off easier. Put my shoes on in T1 because there was a little climb right after the mount line. What would you do differently?: Not much. Bike
Comments: I had ridden this course before, and knew the climb in the first part of the course was long and fairly steep, so I went in wanting to respect it. But...I was way too conservative. The last 8 miles is easy, and I should have known I could have blown it out early and recovered on the steep downhill towards the end. Still, I was pretty strong despite not much early-season bike time. What would you do differently?: Go balls out early. Transition 2
Comments: Awesome T2. No cramping issues whatsoever. What would you do differently?: Nuthin' Run
Comments: Wow...pretty great run. I wasn't feeling awesome coming out of T2, but I was moving. Passed dude in my AG right out of transition...flew by him. Hit the downhill section and opened it up, hitting th eone mile marker in 6:40(!). I knew I had to deal with that hill coming back to the park, so I prepared for it...and it wasn't bad. It was getting warm, but I love the heat, so no biggie. I hit the stretch around the park and I was really working...having a hard time keeping my breathing under control. But I knew that once I got th ethe last little out and back, i just had 600 meters until th efinishing stretch. So I hung it out. Ther ewas one guy about 30 seconds in front of me (found out later he was in my AG, so I tried to real him in the best I could. I ended up about :15 short, but still made up a lot of time in that last third of a mile. What would you do differently?: Nothing, really. This was a fair 5K course, and I was only :59 off my PB...from 14 years ago. Guess I need to run a stand-alone 5K some time... Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit, got a massage, swam a couple hundred yards in the lake and laid out in the sun with Amy and Nola. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not a whole lot of quantity in training. Still riding the residual IM fitness wave. Event comments: Wow...great race. I beat a lot of guys I don't usually beat, and felt super strong. My only qualm: Third. Again. 4-for-4 this season. Actually, if I had bee a couple minutes slower, I would have been out of the Masters OA top three, and would have won my AG. Last updated: 2009-04-21 12:00 AM
