Pre-race routine:

The usual; up at 3 am (early because of the logistics). Got my stuff together then drove to Kenny's house to pick him up. To the AAC about 4:45. Setup T2. Checked the transition flow; counted racks, etc. Then jumped on a bus to T1 and the start. Setup T1. Hung around talking to people. It's nice to know so many triathletes. Texas Triple Threat had about 30 athletes racing. Very cool.
Event warmup:

None.

Comments:

TT start. Ran, dove in and started swimming. I was suprised at how rough the water was. Just kept swimming. Easily got into a good rhythm until the first bouy. At the first bouy a boat had moved into the swimmers and was plucking people out. I had to swim around the boat. Made the first turn bouy and the water seemed to calm down somewhat. Good swimming here. Stayed straight and had good sighting. Made the second turn bouy. Once again rough water. I swam off course a bit coming into the swim exit. I made the mistake of following some swimmers off course instead of sighting for my self. Overall a decent swim considering the conditions.
What would you do differently?:

Sight for myself and not follow other swimmers off course.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

2/32

Plopped on the ground, wetsuit off, helmet on, glasses on. Decided to throw on a jacket. Headed out. Good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. A little long on the transition because of putting on the jacket.

Comments:

The bike course was wet, rainy, hilly and with a headwind. Very challenging course and conditions. I had no problem with the hills as I've trained a lot this year for hills. The wind and the rain slowed me down. I was super cautious on the turns and at intersections.

On the last hill over the bridge coming into Dallas I dropped my chain. I tried to shift it back onto the big ring, but was going up hill and lost all speed. Had to stop and put it back on. This cost me a couple minutes. It was my own fault. I tried to shift too fast to small ring and big cog simultaneously and just threw the chain off. I should know better.

Overall I was disappointed with this ride. I really expected to be in the 20+ mph range. I think all of my HIM and IM training this year has sapped some of my speed.
What would you do differently?:

More race specific training, i.e. intervals and tempo.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s

Good T2. Flying dismount and running with the bike. Glasses off, helmet off while running. Bike racked. Plopped on the ground. Shoes on. Grabbed my number belt, hat, GU and ran.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.

Comments:

As I was running around the AAC I could hear the announcer saying that Matty Reed was finishing and winning the race. That was pretty cool. I wish I could have been on the side by the finish to see it. As I was running out I crossed the pro athletes coming in. Sweet.

The first mile I did 7:03. I thought that was too fast and dialed it back for the next two miles. Probably a mistake. I was feeling great. The weather was perfect running weather.

After seeing the pro athletes I started looking for some of my Texas Triple Threat team mates. Saw Brandon first. He looked good. Then saw Kevin. He's in my AG. But he was probably 2 minutes ahead of me and no way I was making that up in the 3 miles I had left to run.

Hit the turn around. Decided to pick up the pace. Saw many more TTT athletes on the run back to the finish.

Overall, a great run for me. This was a 10k PR run.
What would you do differently?:

For a 10k I should just run on RPE. I was looking at my splits and probably holding back too much.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around talking to all my TTT friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough bike speed work.

Event comments:

Good race that I would definitely do again. I love the venue at Victory park. That would be a great party in good weather.
