Total Time = 2h 18m 26s
Overall Rank = 253/312

Age Group Rank = 24/30
Pre-race routine:

Wake up at 4:45, Banana and Clif Bar, drive to event (35 min.), sip on Infinit, Accel Gel 15 min. before start.
Event warmup:

5 min. bike ride to race site, 10 min. jog, 5 min. swim
Swim
  • 32m 23s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt very relaxed the whole swim, which was good since it felt like a LONG swim (first time racing at this 1k distance). Sighting was much better: every 10 strokes (lift head slightly on stroke before sighting), or every 5 near a mark.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Just need to figure out how to develop more speed over the long term.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

6th in AG, 67 overall
What would you do differently?:

Nothing -- was nice and fast.
Bike
  • 58m 3s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 19.26 mile/hr
Comments:

A few scary downhills (max 33.2 mph) on a CROWDED course so passing was an issue. Had to ride the brakes a few times on the big downhills due to crowds in front. I was NOT about to trust passing at speed doubled-up riders that were not riding straight. (Wish people would stay on the right, yelling ON YOUR LEFT was really getting tiresome).

Love the new tri bike, but now need to get used to fast speeds on aerobars. Tended to keep one hand on aerobar, right hand on pursuit ready to brake, didn't quite have the guts to go "all aero" and hammer with the head down.
What would you do differently?:

Work on getting comfortable screaming downhill in aero position.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Good job racking bike. Grr, spent time fiddling with the race belt. 7th in AG, 104th place overall.
What would you do differently?:

Put the race belt on AFTER shoes (that way you can start running instead of fiddling with it)
Run
  • 45m 15s
  • 4.97 miles
  • 09m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

Calves almost cramped up out of T2. Thighs and gleuts did not like the hills, hills, hills. No upset stomach, but it was close, took only 2 water breaks: the first lap just a few sips, second lap only rinsed out my mouth.
What would you do differently?:

Need to add more run time to the training.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, stretch, apple, banana, water, chocolate milk.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Needed more run time in training for stronger legs. Getting used to new bike.

Event comments:

Great organizing by Setup, the volunteers were fantastic! Beautiful swim. Setup really needs to lengthen the bike course into a 2-lap course before someone crashes. The 200 yds. through the woods was not fun. Big plus having a local race, though. Probably will do it next year.
