Pre-race routine:

Andrew and I woke up, got dressed, and got out the door pretty early. I ate some M&Ms for breakfast and got coffee from the hotel.
We were the 3rd car to arrive at the race site, so we racked our bikes next to each other and went back to the car. I slept for a bit.
Event warmup:

Wrestled myself into my wetsuit, walked down to the water.
Swim
  • 09m 54s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was fun. It was so short!! I kept laughing to myself that the buoys were so close together. Of course I was nervous about the swim because I have only been in the pool twice since November but it was easy and my arms weren't sore or anything. I knew the course was short when I came out in under 10 minutes!
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

We had to run up a long, steep hill out of the lake and into transition. It hurt. I got out of my wetsuit ok but I have only done one transition in the last 1.5 years so I am kinda rusty. :)
Bike
  • 45m 27s
  • 14 miles
  • 18.48 mile/hr
Comments:

I loved the bike. There were some tough hills but I felt I had good leg strength and passed lots of people. Saw a ton of folks walking the hills - I have never seen that in a sprint before!
Once I got about half-way through the bike I felt comfortable that I was not going to suffer and pushed it harder. I had just put my bike back together on Wednesday, so I had no cycling training at all before the race. I was happy with my time, especially with such a challenging course.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Uneventful. Heard them call Andrew's name as he finished while I ran out to start the run.
Run
  • 21m 52s
  • 2.7 miles
  • 08m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

We all accidentally cut the course, so it was about 2.7 miles. I have run 2 5Ks recently and averaged 7:48 and 7:54 in those, so I am happy I was pretty close to that. Once again, no run training. Maybe 1-2 times a week? My legs felt heavy and I was breathing very hard but at the same time I knew I had more in me. I caught one girl but there was another girl in my AG that I couldn't gain any time on. She beat me by 24 seconds.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with Andrew waiting for the awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No triathlon training!

Event comments:

Well, I am happy that Andrew made me do this race! I may have gone for the rest of my life without doing another triathlon but now the spark has been reignited.
BUT....I don't want to do more than sprints. Because I don't want to triathlon train. I like kettlebells and HIIT and I don't want to stop. I am happy enough with my performance that I can enjoy racing at that level and not feel like it's a waste, if that makes sense. I may start doing some bike and run tabatas but that will be the extent of my "traithlon" training until I get bored and want to do something else.
