Pre-race routine:

Left Athens at 5 with Ryan to head to the race site. Nice drive, fun times and made it in time for packet pickup (I was not the only one who woke at an ungodly hour to get to the race site in time). Took time setting up everything and just hung out and had some laughs
Event warmup:

Aside from stretching, none
Swim
  • 13m 16s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

Nice swim, of course by the time I found my pace, it was over. But regardless, I had a good time with it, not sure how I could have improved.
What would you do differently?:

I think what really needs to be done is just getting in the pool more. I have chicken arms, and think that by bulking up more and swimming more, I can be able to power through the water more efficiently. Noticed I crossed over a bit while reaching out, but that may have been due to the wetsuit stretch
Transition 1
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

So, I thought that when you do a triathlon, it was swim bike run, not swim run bike run. Seriously, it was a quarter mile run to transition. My heart rate was spiked which really messed up my timing
What would you do differently?:

Not much, since the transition time started as soon as I got out of the water. The run could not have been helped
Bike
  • 37m 57s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 19.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Not bad, big look around the town. Poor performance on the 3.5 mile climb out of the city, but after that I was golden. Was only passed a few times
What would you do differently?:

It all comes down to getting on the bike more and increasing my power threshold. I feel that my focus was there and I was pushing, but that one long climb was tough. I think I got down to 11 at the lowest, but on the way back in town I maxed out at 38, so it evened out. Still, I am having the hardest time breaking through that 20mph pace zone. When I can get to holding 22 or so, I will be more than happy. Otherwise, I think the bike went well
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Nearly busted it in a flying dismount, but I saved myself. Of course this made me nervous having a near collision, so my legs were more shaky than normal. Took me an extra few seconds getting shoes on. But really, I lost maybe 5-10 seconds max, so no biggie
What would you do differently?:

Work more on bricks, I need to get over jelly legs faster
Run
  • 23m 30s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Best run time ever!!! Im telling you, the extra time running has paid off. For the longest time, I have always been very nervous about the state of my knees and IT band, but it comes down to focusing and being confident in your ability. I knew I could run, and I knew I could hold a fast 5k pace, but I was always afraid to do so. This time was different, and for some reason I was able to phase out the bad thoughts in my head and run harder than I have before. It took no time for my heart rate to get where it needed to be (3 minutes or so, same time it took for my legs to get normal).

The only thing that slowed me down was the speeding locomotive that was another racer that collided with me. There was one point on the course where you go around a semi-blind corer where athletes are going in and out of the race area. Well, so it happened that I ran face first into someone else twice my size and fell straight to the ground. I got back up, embarrassed from the collective *gasp* of the spectators and continued to run. The breath was knocked out of me and my chest still hurts today, 2 days later, but it didn't slow me down too much
What would you do differently?:

Aside from running into someone, I think it went well. At least it wasn't a cyclist or spectator.

Just run more! I need to begin to incorporate more hill work and tempo training into my workouts
Post race
Warm down:

Cool down, fluids, massage from calf cramps on the bike. Shower, lunch, hanging with Ryan around the race site

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Calf cramps on the bike (good thing they didn't develop enough to slow me down on the run), long run to transition.

Event comments:

So after resting and cleaning up, I looked at the results page. I never carry a watch with me on a race, so all of the times were news to me. I was shocked to see the results: 1st in age group. I did it!!! I finally placed in an event. The feeling was sublime. I know, I know, its a small race and a sprint, but still, coming from a place where I have no athletic background and injuries galore, its a good feeling to see your work pay off in this way. I love this sport!
