Swim
Comments: Swim was awesome thanks to a sweet current. Most say it helped by about 2 min, but i was still 5 min faster than last year. The coaching sessions i took really helped. I was a little more successful catching occasional drafts, but it's still not a strategy i can depend on. What would you do differently?: nothing. Transition 1
Comments: disappointed with my transition time. elected to run in my bike shoes this time as i wasn't far from the "bike out", but i still need to be faster. Fumbled with socks for a while. Bike
Comments: bike was solid. 3min faster than last year. I left it all out there. Kept my 12-27 on just in case, but tried not to use the higher gears...had to a couple times. What would you do differently?: don't think i could have ridden any better at my fitness level. just need more miles and hill work so i can take the hills stronger and the flats faster. Next year i definitely want to go 12-23 and hopefully i'll have a tri bike w/ a rear disk as i think there are a few more minutes i could squeeze out. Also think i could race about 7-10lbs lighter. Also, it's a VERY crowded course. Need to be careful out there. Transition 2
Comments: dissapointing t2. got out of shoes at the bottom of hill and dismounted cleanly. my trans spot was right next to a tree which was great, except i ran to the wrong tree. stood there for 10 seconds staring at somebody else's gear wondering why it was in my spot. Then realized i was at the wrong spot! What would you do differently?: Really need to pay better attention where my stuff is. that's the second race in a row i messed that up. Run
Comments: Felt great at the start and knocked out the first 3 miles at about a 7:30 pace, but the wheels came off when i got out in the sun. last 2 miles of run were brutal for me. i overheated and nearly shut down. Was able to maintain running, but i had absolutely no kick whatsoever. People were flying by me and i couldn't care less. I was still 2 min faster than last year but slower than Columbia which is a much harder run. My goal for 3 years has been to break 50 min on this run, but have not been able to do it. What would you do differently?: Maybe i went to hard early on the run or on the bike. I just don't handle heat well and need to take that into account better throughout the race if i want to have a strong finish on hot days. it wasn't even THAT hot, and there was little humidity. Nutrition perhaps was a culprit too. i only took water and a couple gels as that worked great the last few races. perhaps on hot days i need something more like a sports drink with electrolytes. Post race
Warm down: i laid down on the grass and tried to cool down. a guy next to me wasn't doing to well and the medics came over to help him. One girl looked at me and asked if i wanted to get checked out, so i said sure. spent 10 min chillin (literally) in the med tent, but i was fine. Felt like i was being pampered by the med staff...they were great. Event comments: Those volunteers are just awesome. Last updated: 2009-04-27 12:00 AM
