Pre-race routine:

Up at 430, finished loading the car, ate left over lasagna, and drove to the race site, a little over an hour away. Caught up with my neighbor gdale, met wsolt, and chatted briefly with Mike and Dudley, after setting up my transition area.
Event warmup:

As usual for me, pretty much nothing.
Run
  • 22m 53s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Seeing as this was my first duathlon, I wasn't really sure how fast to go out on the first run and not blow up. I wanted to be under 23 minutes, and finished at 22:53, so I was satisfied with the first leg.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

I didn't realize I was moving this slow in the transition area. My T1 time was 20th out of 33. Can definitely improve on this.
What would you do differently?:

Move with more urgency.
Bike
  • 46m 40s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 17.74 mile/hr
Comments:

For whatever reason, I didn't have much on the bike. I was passed by way too many people, including a number of duathlon folks who had finished behind me on the run. My biking needs a lot of work. Adding to this, the road was quite bad, as there were uneven creases and potholes everywhere.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

This wasn't a bad transition. 12th out of 33, so not too bad. Still could have been a bit faster.
What would you do differently?:

Again, more urgency.
Run
  • 24m 16s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

The second leg of a duathlon is considerably harder than the first. I felt like I didn't have a whole lot left for this run, but I still managed to catch most of the duathlon athletes that had passed me on the bike; but not all of them.
What would you do differently?:

Do a few more run/bike/run bricks. I felt like I should have been a lot stronger on this run.
Post race
Warm down:

Chatted with a few BT'ers near the finish line area. Ate lunch with Mike and Dudley. Hadn't seen them for a while, so it was good seeing and hanging out with them again. Looking at the posted results, I saw that I had taken 2nd in my age group, so hung around for the award ceremony where I received a nice plaque.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My weak bike leg. Definitely need to spend more time in the saddle.

Event comments:

This is my first time competing here after jockstrapping the previous two years. The run is pancake flat, and the roads for the bike are terrible. Paint around the potholes would be nice. The lunch after the race was very good. I will do this race again next year.
