Pre-race routine:

A friend and I shared a hotel room in Smithfield. I got up at 5:15am, rinsed in the shower, got dressed, and then packed up the car. We had enough extra time to eat breakfast at the hotel. I ate an english muffin and orange juice.
Event warmup:

I set up transition and then went for a quick spin to check out the beginning and end of the bike course. Seemed pretty straight forward -- I thought it would be a fast course.
Swim
  • 05m 9s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Extremely happy with the swim. It was short, so I couldn't lose much time to the leaders. The pool course meant I didn't have to worry about sighting. I did have to pass one guy, but it was quick and I didn't lose any time because of it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Great. I average 1:30-1:40 in T1, so I've been practicing lately getting my shoes on and running behind the bike. It all fell together pretty nicely here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 41m 59s
  • 14 miles
  • 20.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Because of the TT starts in the pool, the bike course was practically empty. This made pacing off of other riders impossible. I only saw a dozen riders the entire leg.

The end of the course came as a surprise. I had just been thinking to myself that I had probably had another 5 miles to go, when I turned a corner and saw transition. Consequently I had been pacing myself a bit slow.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Another great transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 23m 55s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

By the time I got off the bike, my HR was sky high, and I had no luck bringing it down during the run. My normal cruising pace essentially became my all out max pace.

Due to injury, I have been laying off the run for nearly two months, and I have lost some of my ability to run well under fatigue. I expect it to return as I increase my run training.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Given the circumstances, I ran as well as I could have.
Post race
Event comments:

Great post race food. Homemade pizza made right next the transition area.
