Swim
Comments: Let me just start off by saying this swim did not feel as amazing as it evidently turned out to be. I didnt feel super strong or ridiculously fast or anything! I managed to get a spot right at the start of the swim, unlike usual where I kinda start in a pack, but it was a perfect start. I got out ahead fairly quickly, while Scott (relay swimmer who won overall) did the same about 50 feet to the left of me. His position turned out to be a little better then mine. Anyways I had a pack drafting off me (led by my friend Pat) for about 600m before I lost them and was out on my own. From that point onwards I led and was trying to catch Scott who ended up getting about a minute ahead by the end. I came out of the water just under 23 minutes and turns out I got the course record! Wahoooo! Scott couldnt get it because he was a relay swimmer! What would you do differently?: Nadddddddda! Transition 1
Comments: I'm always so bloody slow at T1! But whatevs, I'll figure it out eventually! What would you do differently?: Go faster? Bike
Comments: Right from when I came out of the water, my lungs weren't having any of it. It was a hellish bike ride to say the least. I got out of transition still in 2nd, with Jasper Blake just behind me. He caught me within about 300m and that was that! The guy is a tank on the bike (and swim evidently). From the very first hill on the bike, I felt like I was gonna absolutely die! I was coughing A LOT and felt SUPER weak on the bike :( The whole 87km went by like this, with me dying on every hill and getting passed by a bajillion people! Not so impressed with the ride! What would you do differently?: Not be sick? Not really a whole lot I could do about this one. I think all the swimming during Commonwealths and no biking/running REALLY hurt my cycling. Transition 2
Comments: Meh, nothing special! Could have been faster for sure, but I was in pretty bad shape and was having a HUGE coughing fit. What would you do differently?: Again, not be sick! Run
Comments: As I said previously, I had a coughing fit in T2. The situation was extremely similar to the bike, with momentary coughing fits and gasping. It wasn't pretty to say the least. I made it through the first lap without having to walk at all (suprisingly!) but made a pact with myself to walk the aid stations on the second lap. Most of the second lap was DEATHLY bad, with one km that was over 6:30. NOT good. Managed to run the last 1.5 km after the last aid station in spite of my lungs shutting down and not being able to breathe momentarily. What would you do differently?: Not be sick! Run more in the last few weeks! Post race
Warm down: Medical tent for about 30 minutes, took my first few puffs of Ventolin and managed to get the glassy stare out of my eyes! It felt like I'd been an asthmatic for my whole life! What limited your ability to perform faster: Sickness Lack of bike/run in the last month Event comments: Great race! I wish I could have enjoyed it a bit more though! So I had Vince, Choppy, and their friend Sheldon staying at my place in Victoria for Friday/Saturday night and it was grrrreat! We all checked in at around the same time on Saturday (and picked up race packages) and they branched off for a short ride while I did my own thing.
On Saturday I just did a mini brick of 30m ride and 15m run, with some short intervals thrown in here and there. Didnt feel super strong and my lungs felt like they were going to fall out from coughing, but I knew I could race on Sunday. It turned to be an almost fatal decision!
Managed a 3-5 minute swim to the start zone since it was about 100m away from the beach where you come in at!
