Pre-race routine:

The usual.
Swim
  • 26m 18s
  • 500 meters
  • 05m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

The ocean swim kicked my butt! It was really a lot tougher than I though. The lifeguards carried 3 people out. I stuck to a combination of backstroke & breaststroke. My freestyle was too weak to keep up against the current & still feel like I was getting anywhere.
What would you do differently?:

Much more time in the ocean. That's the only way to address this. I feel confident in the pool & pretty good in the bay, the ocean is a whole different animal...
Transition 1
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

My brother, who has been an active triathlete for years now, commented that my transitions were faster than his... Coming from an Ironman Finisher, that says it all...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...
Bike
  • 37m 11s
  • 11 miles
  • 17.75 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Up my effort. I sand bagged it a little. This being my first tri, I was concerned with finishing, first & foremost, so I didn't push myself as hard as I could have...
Transition 2
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

I almost dropped the bike when I noticed my brother had surprised me by showing up to cheer me on! After that, I had a little trouble getting the bike racked with the aero bar water bottle in place...
What would you do differently?:

Resolve the water bottle positioning so I can rack the bike quicker.
Run
  • 25m 45s
  • 2.7 miles
  • 09m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

It was a great course for a first timer, with just a little headwind on the northbound leg, other wise a flat run with a nice cooling ocean breeze. I set a new personal best 5k time by over a minute per mile!!
What would you do differently?:

I could have run harder, but again I was trying to make sure I finished above all else...
Post race
Warm down:

15 minute walk to cool down...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Holding back to make sure I finished.

Event comments:

It was my first Tri, so of course I thought it was great!

Course: Flat course with almost no elevation changes, something in the area of 113 feet over the entire course. Mostly smooth pavement with some rough segments, but nothing major. One jolt was hard enough to move my seat a little, but I should have seen that one coming. Got lucky that I didn't blow a tire on that one...
