Swim
Comments: There was a women's wave and a men's wave. The women went first with the men going 10 minutes later. I think that is a first for this event--they kept saying that it was the biggest turnout they had ever had in the 19 years of the event. When they said Go I took off like a shot and just swam as fast as I could. The water is pretty cold so I am glad I got in first. I couldn't see very many people in front of me but couldn't fathom that I might be near the front. I have a tendency to pull right so I wasn't exactly with the rest of the pack either. No problem, I just swam until I could touch and then stood up and ran out. What would you do differently?: Nothing, really, unless it would be to swim faster and go straighter. I just started masters swimming so hopefully my swimming will improve over the winter. Transition 1
Comments: Transition times are a guess since they didn't break them down. Great transition. I was 8th into transition, but left in 4th so I am pretty happy with that. Bike
Comments: There is a super steep hill going out of the park with no time to get up speed to go up. The rest of the course is all hills, no flats whatsoever. I was a little timid on the hills last year so I was determined to hit the downhills super hard this year. I didn't look at my speedometer even once on a downhill because I knew it would freak me out. I looked later and my top speed was 35mph. I don't think I have ever gone that fast before. I felt real strong the whole ride. As I came back down that steep hill to the transition area the 1st place guy finally caught up to me. I only passed one lady about 3 miles in (the men started 10 minutes after the women, remember) and there was no one else in sight the whole rest of the way. I started getting worried because I was pretty sure there were at least 10-15 people out of the water before me. (As it turns out I was wrong about that) I thought sure I would see more women on the bike but decided I was just too far back to catch them. No men caught me on the whole bike leg so I was pretty proud of that, too. The first man caught up with me at the bike dismount line. What would you do differently?: Well, I wish I could train more on hills but I just don't live near any. I don't really like packing up my bike and driving somewhere to ride so I just make do without hills. Transition 2
Comments: Ran into transition with first place guy and we threw our bikes on the rack at the same time (we were racked right next to each other). I threw off my helmet and put on my shoes and ran out right on his heels. Of course he ran disappeared quickly, but he wins most of the events around here and I don't so I felt pretty good about almost matching his transition time. What would you do differently?: Nothing. In fact, I think that the "overall" check box needs to have "supremely awesome" as a choice because "good" just doesn't cut it. Run
Comments: Not such a great time but remember I don't train on hills. At all. There are NO hills within my running route range. None. I just kept going as fast as I could. When I was running out of the park I tried to get my husband to tell me what place I was in but he didn't understand me and he didn't know anyway. I was still confused that I didn't see anyone. I KNEW I wasn't in 1st place but I thought for sure I would have seen SOMEONE by now. Finally at about 2-3 minutes from the turn around a lady went by me. A minute later another one. Then the 1st place guy. Then no one. At that point I knew I was in third. I got to the turn around and about 2 minutes later met the next woman behind me. I just kept running as hard as I could. When I got to the gravel road I knew that if I didn't see anyone behind me I had it made. It turns out that the 4th place woman was in my age group--she beat me by a bit on the swim (I beat her out of transition, though) and on the run. So I won the age group based on my faster bike time. Post race
Warm down: Nothing. Just got some water and oranges and hugged my kids. Event comments: This race is a great one--very well run. The transition racks were too close together which made it hard to get the bikes in and out. I think they weren't prepared for the large number of people. Last year there were around 100 participants, this year there were 175ish. Anyway, I had a really great time and I like this race even though the hills are a little scary. Overcast
Overall Rank = 3/92
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 1/7
Overall rank includes women only. My overall men and women placing was 23/174.
Drove over to Lincoln City on Saturday. My mother lives within 1/4 mi. of the race start so we had a nice dinner, bed, etc. My husband and I walked my bike over to Regatta Park and I rode up the hill a few times just so I knew I could do it (last year I walked it part of the way).
Got up at 6am, ate a granola bar and a banana, drank some water. Left to walk over to the park about 10 to 7.
Daren helped me get settled then he went back to the house to get the kids up and eat breakfast. They all (husband, 7 kids, and my mom and her husband) came over about 15 minutes before the race started.
Nothing, as usual. Put on wetsuit and stared at the buoy out on the lake. It was closer in than I thought it would be which was nice since I have a tendency to get scared and teary eyed when I see those buoys so far away.
Hopped in the water with about 2-3 minutes to go and got my face wet, etc. I decided to start right up front even though I am not a fast swimmer. I just thought if I get up front and go like crazy I might keep away from the fray.
