Pre-race routine:

The swim was 500 yds in a pool, seated slow to fast. Being a swimmer I was in the last heat so there was lots of time to walk around and stretch. I didn't start until 10:15 AM. I think this later start helped me.
Event warmup:

Other than walking around I swam 150 yds before my heat started
Swim
  • 06m 58s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

I came up around 20 - 30 seconds short on the swim. I' not sure why. I went out hard, probably too hard since I cut back on my swim training after my last race 3 weeks ago. My training has been for the 1500 meter distance so maybe I was a bit overly optimistic.
What would you do differently?:

Go out a little slower.
Transition 1
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

My T1 was good for me. I really worked on it at the end of the season last year. I was 24 out of 187. I swam without a jersy so I had to put one on. I also put on socks and shoes and ran to the mount and jumped on.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I'm not ready to give up my socks and not sure I'm ready to learn to start with my shoes in my pedals
Bike
  • 37m 48s
  • 12.1 miles
  • 19.21 mile/hr
Comments:

I rode well but lacked a little strength on the hills. I lost ground to a couple of riders on tri bikes. I ride a road bike with clip-ons. They left me behind on the down hills and I am a good descender.
What would you do differently?:

Switch over to a tri bike? I don't think I'm ready to spend the money. Train on hills. I thought the course was going to be much flatter
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

I feel I am good in T2. I was 15th overall out of 187
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 23m 48s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

My best run leg ever.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing

Event comments:

Spectacular weather. This was my best race, I've ever entered. The course record for my age group was soft. I broke the record by 4:28. However a guy only 4 years younger than me went over 7 minutes faster than I did. Every time he ages up he sets new records, so it's only a matter of time until he obliterates my record (if someone doesn't beat him to the punch).
