Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30; Coffee; home made muffin; stretching; Used this race to try new things, although they say you shouldn't but this was only a "C" training race. Had a shake instead of oatmeal/egg combo. Seemed to work well for short race; probably not enough fuel for Olympic. Left for site at 6:15.
Event warmup:

Didn't get the entire warm up I wanted. Cold, windy weather. Did a 10minute run warm up; easy with some running drills and short sprints to get HR up. Was going to bike but didn't feel like changing into shoes and helmut. Wasn't allowed to warm up for swim; 12 heats of 16 swimmers and they wanted to stay on schedule.

  • 02m 26s / 100 meters
Comments:

My swimming is definitely improving. Last year I was 121/128. I was 6/8 in my group for swim.
What would you do differently?:

Guess I can practice cold start swimming in case I am not able to warm up in some of the races coming up this season.
Transition 1
  • 05m 4s
Comments:

Used female change tent to dry off, put on leg warmers, jersey, dry hair, before running to bike and then taking off wet socks and putting on dry ones, helmut, gloves, and race belt. In normal circumstances, my T1 is barely over a minute. Since this was not an important race felt it was better to take the extra time and try to be warm on the bike.

Ran with shoes on. Short run and it was on pavement. I think, for me, it is faster than trying to get into my shoes clipped on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a change of shorts as well. My wet butt was freezing on the bike.
Bike
  • 46m 14s
  • 20 kms
  • 25.96 km/hr
Comments:

Even though my speed was a tad slower than last years 26.2, I was much stronger on the bike. Last year sunny and warm and no wind. Couldn't feel my legs on the bike. They were frozen even from the start. They definitely don't function the same as when they are warm and I was hesitant to go nuts and really push and have something pull or strain.

Was 5/8 in my group. Would have been better with less transition. The 2 top girls didn't change.
Transition 2

Comments:

Uneventful.
Run
  • 31m 40s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 20s  min/km
Comments:

Run was pretty good. Felt strong enough but my left hamstring was tight and everytime I stepped it 'jarred' me. Didn't really hurt much though. Ran up the hill. Wasn't too bad.

Was 6/8 in my group.
Post race
Event comments:

This is one of the best organized races we do. The field of competition is also probably the highest of any race that WE do. Lots of people from the military. Extremely fast runners and they are used to riding the hills in the area.

Tried to go out slow and not get HR too high.
Suit: NO
Course: 8 lane pool with 2 per lane - back and forth swimming; not circular. I am NOT a good cold start swimmer. With a warm up I estimated my time would be 11:30 so was quite happy with 12:12. Did a test at pool a few days earlier and it was 13:00 and was freaking.
