Swim
Comments: There was about a 2 ft. surf which was a change from last year's bath tub. My goal was to beat last year's time and did that. Due to the current, the buoy ropes stopped cutting the corner tight. Learned that the hard way @ first buoy getting tied up. Sighting was tough with only 3 buoys and surf hiding them most of the time. Stayed mostly on course though and never really found right feet to stay behind. That said, still pleased. What would you do differently?: I was never really tired on swim, just held good pace. Guess could have pushed harder. took :34 seconds off last year's race in much better conditions. Transition 1
Comments: The Transition Area was set up so that you leave the beach into TA and either head left or right to your bike. Luckily, I had a spot right in front of the swim exit. I cut :21 off of last year's, but mostly due to this reason. Everything went well and had a really good mount. What would you do differently?: Can always run faster with Bike I guess. I was set up in too low a gear and had to quickly adjust to get up small hill at start while still putting feet in shoes. Bike
Comments: Finally realized how off my bike computer is. Afterwards it said 13.76 miles and avg speed of 22 something. That was off. I really thought I pushed it harder than time said. Most of the time I was between 22.5-23 mph. That said, did :45 seconds better than last year so will take it. I got off the bike feeling pretty good. What would you do differently?: Need to get bike comp. figured out. I rather error on it showing slower than faster time. False sense of reality! Again, starting in back waves you end of passing a lot of folks, but when they are going 18, you feel like your going 25. In reality I should have pushed harder. Breathing was good, just lack power to push those lower gears. Transition 2
Comments: I have no idea how this was slower than first transition. My dismount was my best in a while and I had nobody in front of me to clutter the way. I did take a few seconds to grab water bottle and soak head and face, but maybe 2 seconds? Anyway, shoes went on easy, grabbed visor and race # and I was off. What would you do differently?: Run faster with Bike and out of T2? Run
Comments: I felt 10x better coming out of transition than I did last year. Negative thoughts of stopping though were there the 1st .50 mile or so. Not sure why, I was hoping for better time closer to 23:00. I decided I would pick it up after the 1/2 way point and my HR seemed to be back to "normal"... Felt good exiting the park and back onto the road. ran with same two guys in front of me and wanted to pass them, but legs said otherwise. Last year I went off way too early and this year I waited too long. Started sprint with about .20 miles left. I did beat last year by 1:02 so that was good. I think this year was hotter, but it's always hot. What would you do differently?: Keep working on intervals. I feel faster than last year, just not showing much of it. This run was more mind over matter. My legs could do it, just needed the will. Oh well, it was fun and I improved which is what I wanted to do. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed a bottle of water and gatorade and hit some shade in the grass. Then packed up bike etc and put in car and walked back to see results and talk to a few friends who were there. What limited your ability to perform faster: My goal was 1:11:00, but conditions were a bit worse on swim this year. Always next race. Overall I was happy winning the division (although only 4 people). This is always a fun race and well put together. Missed the guy with the hose at the turnaround point this year though! Maybe next year I don't run and swim the course day before? Event comments: Good times... Will be back next year. Last updated: 2009-05-05 12:00 AM

Day before drove up to pick up packet @ hotel. Walked to the beach and did a nice 20 minute swim since it had been a while since I did an OWS. Glad I did as conditions were same as next morning. Then I jogged the run course to get re-acquainted. Did not fall asleep until 1:30am, then up @ 4:15am. Had everything ready to go and just put bike in car and had Clif bar, banana and sucked on gatorade endurance.
Got to site around 5:45am and took time with setting up. Luckily the rack was not full and nice space. Had rack right in front of swim exit:) Got marked and picked up timing chip. Walked to beach after porta potty trip and ran a few hundred yards. Then got into the water and noticed the strong "helping" current right away.
