Swim
Comments: Set-up had a technical error on the timing so this includes to T1. So this report is late. Good swim. Didn't have a good feel for the sighting, but I came out fresh and ready for the bike. No tight stomach like sometimes. What would you do differently?: Longer strokes. Transition 1
Comments: Good T1. Had to remember to repack my T1 bag but was off quick. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Looking at my Garmin, HR was z5 starting out (oops, must have ran too hard out of the water or with the bike), then was back down to z3 at about mile 12, then stayed in z3 mostly until mile 36. Then was z4 and up and down until the end (likely against the headwind). Biking on the highway was fun but the wind on the way back wasn't. What would you do differently?: Went too hard at the beginning and also at the end... affected my run. Mistake was trying to keep up with everyone. My swim is better than my bike, so I get passed a lot (not to mention my bike is 10 yrs old... but it is really the engine that needs work). Probably stayed in too high of a gear too. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was quick... gave the bike away and was directed to my shoes. Changed socks and was off. What would you do differently?: Slow down. Take some fluid or nutrition. Run
Comments: First mile was ok, 8:30. Legs were relatively loose but it felt slow, so I pushed it more than I should have. Mile 2 was 8:57 and the bridges pushed me more than I should have. Was in z5... oops again. It hit me mile 3 (9:52) right after the big hill in the city... cramps and felt chills (maybe from a cold, my nose was running faster than I was). Had to walk some which hurt the pride as I was only on mile 3. Stomach tightness got worse so I kept the walk-run going. Took some Coke around mile 4 (12:10) to see if it would help the stomach. It seemed to help around mile 5 (11:21) and was able to run more to Mile 6 (10:55). Made the turn and slowed down some on mile 7 (11:52) and continued plugging along at 8 (12:01), 9 (11:46), and at 10 I started to get fatigued (13.41). Was nearing the end and got some motivation but felt some leg cramps coming on so didn't want to risk stopping or pushing too much. Mile 11, 12 and 13 were 12:30ish and didn't have any left for a kick at the end. What would you do differently?: Pace better on the bike. Improve fitness/nutrition. Knocked 15 mins off the Patriot Half time. Post race
Warm down: Sat down had some water. Talked to Steve. Took the ferry back to the car and drove back to Virginia Beach. What limited your ability to perform faster: Pacing. Maybe nutrition. Event comments: Great race and well organized. The logistics were a new challenge but Set-up did well to make it a fun event. Last updated: 2009-05-05 12:00 AM

Dinner at the hotel. Talked to the family at the table next door. Dad was doing his 3rd Ironman... he had 2 beers. Nice folks to meet. Up at 5:30 and went to T-1 to check on the bike and fill water bottles. Went back to the battleship to park the car and was lucky to get a ride back to the beach.
None.
