![]() Swim
Comments: First triathlon...just started to really swim in December. I took an 8 week swim class starting in Jan. We would do one group workout a week (in the pool on in SF Bay) and then we'd be on our own for the rest of the week..about 2-3 swim workouts. Overall, I felt good about the swim. My base pace is around 140 per 100. I swan around 135. It was a very mellow start. I started in the middle of pack on the left side. No real bumping around at the start or throughout the race. There were some waves out there. At one point, it felt like a huge boat went by because I was getting tossed around a bit. Navigation was great. What would you do differently?: I'd go harder. I think I could have pushed harder the entire race. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Very good transition. Ran up the boat ramp. Grabbed some water..walked and took a couple of sips. Ran over to my bike, close to the ramp, stripped down, got my shoes on, and ran to the exit. What would you do differently?: Not much. Maybe rubberband my shoes so I can put them on while I'm on the bike. Also, my try to get tri shoes and not wear socks. ![]() Bike
Comments: I just started riding in Novemeber. I had about 600 miles under my belt. I basically spun up all the hills and smoothly as possible. My plan was to chill up the hills, bomb the downhills, and push the flats. I typically average high 16s on my rides. I was very please to see the 17.4 What would you do differently?: I think another year of riding would really help. I just need to get the miles in, build up the legs. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: I practiced taking my feet out of my shoes and placing them on top every ride during training. Worked great during the race. What would you do differently?: Not much. Very happy with it. ![]() Run
Comments: I thought running was my strong suit. I can usually run sub 42 for 6.2 miles. Didn't get a chance to see the run course beforehand. I heard it was "hilly" but had no idea just how hard it was. I was hoping to be in the low to mid 7s for the run. I felt pretty good coming off the bike. My legs were a bit tired. However, as I hit the course, it seemed like I was just constantly running up hill. My heart rate was in the low 160s..I felt good cardio wise but the body was tired. It felt like I was speedwalking the entire way. As I was running, it felt like I was running in the low 9s. I refused to walk up any hills. I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. I was so relieved when I hit the 5 mile mark and knew I only had one mile left, downhill. I just let my legs go and didn't hold back. What would you do differently?: I would train more/bigger hills. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Made my way down the dock and hung out in the water with the wife/kid. Event comments: I only drank Smart Water on my bike..ate one gel cap..and grap a sip here and there of Gatorade. On the run, I grabbed water here and there. Perhaps, my run could have been better if I had some gel/gu (although, in training I tried some and I couldn't find any that sat well in my stomach). I need to work on the nutrition/food part more. Last updated: 2009-05-06 12:00 AM

1st triathlon...just started swimming and biking in late Oct/early November.
Woke up about 6:45 (slept in camper). Ate a pretty big breakfast at 7am...eggs, bacon, potatoes, bagel/cream cheese, and strawberries. Stretched a bit.
Rode down Lynch Hill around 8 am. Set up my transition area...stretched a bit more. Walked over to the swim start at 9am..my wave was at 9:40.
