Pre-race routine:

Not exactly fresh for this race. Was kind of stressing the night before. Train through races are always hard for me, as I always want to do well and knowing I'm not on fresh legs always makes me question why I'm racing. I was also worried about my bike cuz I wanted to ride the disc and 1080 to make sure they are good to go for Kansas. I just glued them up the day before and the 1080 front barely has any clearance with a Zero G brake. Stayed up in Longmont the night before. Got up early and had some hotel coffee and an apple walnut scone from Whole Foods. Thank God for my great wife who ran out and got me a Grande Americano with room.
Event warmup:

We stayed about 5 miles away from Transition, so I just ended up riding to the race site while Meg was on a coffee run. Suited up and swam about 250 out and back.
Swim
  • 13m 38s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

Actual time was right at 13:00, so I was pretty happy cuz I wanted to go 13 or under. I've been working hard on the swim and it seems like it's the hardest of the disciplines to come around. I started pretty wide and soon realized I should have just lined up at the bouey line, cuz that's where I ended up. Had people around me the whole time, not much fighting, and sighted well. Only veered off course once when I lost a little bit of focus. 8th outta 30 in my division. Slowly creeping towards the front :)
What would you do differently?:

I need to start racing the swim portion. It's taken me alot of time to get some confidence in the water, but I've got a better grasp of pacing than in previous years. It's time to start upping the ante!
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Transition went nice and smooth for me. Man I'm loving the DeSoto T1 First Wave wetsuit. Hands down it blows my Zoot Zenith outta the water with how quick it comes off and comfy it is while swimming.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing this was a fast transition for me.
Bike
  • 28m 39s
  • 12.42 miles
  • 26.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Got into my shoes pretty quickly and just started driving as hard as I could. This is the attitude I need to embrace during the swim. Didn't really hold much back for the run, but I think I'm done with being conservative during short course racing. I'm glad I put alot of miles in during March/April, cuz it's given me a chance to really work on speed in May. My wattage during this race was the highest I've ever seen. My weight is also the lowest. So I feel like things are starting to come together.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing right now.
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

Faster than quite a few of the Elites, so I ain't complaining.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 19m 35s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Took off with reckless abandon until I saw the hill. Eased up a little, charged the hill, and floated the backside. Felt good. Think I could've gone a touch faster had I dug a little deeper, but I'm satisfied with this.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than have a fresh set o' running sticks for this race.
Post race
Warm down:

No warm down. I should have jumped in the lake, but didn't even think about it till after we left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Previous weeks race/training. Low priority race.

Event comments:

I'm really happy with how this race turned out. I didn't think I'd do well, but ended up with right where I should be at this time. So I'm very happy. Hiked/jogged with Meg at the Flatirons afterward. Grabbed some pizza loaded with all kinds of wonderful meats and cheeses (pure guilty indulgence). Chased it with the strongest margarita I've ever had and topped it off with gelato. Pretty much a perfect day!
