Pre-race routine:

went out night before to get acclimated. I always do this becuase it keeps me calmer race am to know the general area etc. Well set up even I was surprised how much stuff they had. Music, vendors awesome swag...

three days before lots of water every day and clean eating with carb loading 48 hrs before and italian night before.
Event warmup:

Got up early ate powerbar and banana, coffe then lots of water. Drove to race listening to my ipod imix Ironamn. set up trans, put on wetsuit and did practice swim. Talked to folks.
Swim
  • 43m 5s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Man what a mess I was. Hours and hours of masters class and learning to bilateral breath. I don't know if its open water issues, the wetsuit or what but I ended up swimming just about every stroke EXCEPT freestyle. I tried and tried but I would get off course within two strokes. I am great in the pool. I can do 35 laps without any problem sub 30 min in a pool and this was like being a new swimmer all over again. I noticed everyone else was zig zagging all over the place too.
What would you do differently?:

Get out of the pool and into the lakes. I really need to practice open water swimming and sighting. I also really don't like my wetsuit so I will first try practing swimming with it but I may opt for no wetsuit unless the water is really really cold.
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

I would like to learn how to get my shoes on while on the bike but my run is so bad I don't think the few seconds will really make a difference.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 37s
  • 25 miles
  • 19.58 mile/hr
Comments:

I really focused on drinking more water on this ride. problem was I finished my bottle halfway and was out and there was no more to be had. Next time I will put another bottle on my aerotail.
What would you do differently?:

Bring more water. Work on cornering.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Did a gel shot as rode into trans. Lost sunglasses as a result and worried about time penalty for leaving them on the ground. Took shoes off the second I got off the bike. ran barefoot to trans. Took a moment to drink water then decided to bring bottle with me on run due to being out of water on the bike. I had problems with hydration at St Anthonys so I wanted to be better hydrated this time. I think it worked but its certainly not ideal.
Run
  • 1h 08m 20s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 11m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Ok so I want to be positive because there is just no point getting down on myself. When I started tri I ran a 15 minute mile for three miles. I can do 10:38 for 10k now (but not as part of a tri). Maybe its genetics and I realize what makes me strong on the bike is probably what makes me so weak on the run. I am a work in progress on this and I have to remember that. To go from first to last due to the run is pretty frustrating. Seeing all the people I pass on the bike run by me hurts too. This race I imporved my time by like 15 seconds per mile over St anthonys so i am getting better.
What would you do differently?:

I saved myself on the bike pretty well. I think i need ot learn to force myslef to hurt a little more on the run in terms of making myself go fatser. All the internal monolgue is 'its ok go slow' yada yada when it should be "shut up run till your lungs burn'
Post race
Warm down:

hung out got cool water bottle. drank lots of water and gatoraide. waited for hubby to finish. Got award then went home and drank three beers and ate a big plate of mexican food! (May explain why the run sucks huh?)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Short legs, beer and mexican food.

Event comments:

With only 400 racers you would be amazed how much stuff they give you and how well organized this was. Lots of sponsors, tents, great swag (very cool water bottle, medal, very cool designed t shirt, cowbells for kid etc), music, food (so much they were trying to give it all away), phtographers, USAT officials explaining stuff and helping out in transition, well marked start and finish with big banners etc. It really was of all the races I have done even compared to St Anthonys which had 6000 people. I was expecting a hokey little race and this was very professional. I will for sure do it again.

Course: Out and back around two orange bouys. Lake is fuller so all the talk about how yucky it was is no longer true. Water was typical lake water. Really not bad at all except for squishy stuff on bottom about 5 yards out from shore. time trial start two swimmers at a time.

Kept HR is mid zone to save myself for the run It seemed to work a bit better for me. Its hard holding back on the bike and the back half I think my Hr crept up becuase i was wanting to push a bit more.
Wind: Little with gusts
Course: Do not be fooled by other race reports This IS a hilly course. To me, hilly means a course with more than three hills and ones where you have to get in your tiny gear and stand up. This course is a lot of hills. Nothing too long but lots of up and down and having to change into your small gear. I followed coaches advice and raced down the hills then went small gear high cadence to keep HR steady and I think it really worked. I have noisy gears and I felt like I was changing them every ten seconds to keep up with the hills. While they did allow traffic on the roads I rarely saw any. There were a few downhills where I was 30mph plus and I was thinking if a car or golf cart pulls out now I am a dead woman...

Course: Again..they said flat and to me it is not. I think flat as in SCT or Florida races. Flat means FLAT. This is rolling little hilly golf cart path. Little rolling hills slows me down and I am a turtle to start with. Its all shaded, very pretty with tunnels that are really dark when its overcast like it was. You run out turn around and run back.
