Pre-race routine:

I wasn't sure about the weather so I treated the event as if it was just a workout. The evening before I went out with friends for dinner and drinks. Woke up around 5am and decided what the hell and went down for the race. I got an egg mcmuffin and a gatorade on the way to the race. Got there with plenty of time. I got a spot in transition and talked with a couple people that were around me. I was really concerned about how cold the water was going to be.
Event warmup:

I went for a jog to loosen up.
Swim
  • 10m 36s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

WOW! I have never swam in that cold of water before. I had an issue with my head beening way too cold. It caused me to swim with my head out of the water. I am a slow swimmer to start. This made it much slower.
What would you do differently?:

I would acquire a long sleeve suit and use a neoprene head cap to keep my head a bit warmer.
Transition 1
  • 03m 24s
Comments:

When I got out of the water I was a little disoriented. You get out of deep water onto land 20 feet from transition. I struggled to get my suit off. I purposely took a lot of extra time to dry off. I was concerned the bike ride would be cold. I decided to put on a jacket and use toe warmers for the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Get out of suit better. Move a bit faster.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 10s
  • 21 miles
  • 18.22 mile/hr
Comments:

The lack of time on the bike really showed. I was not able to maintain a good speed into the wind and on the hills. I maintained a great speed out only to fizzle into the wind on the return.
What would you do differently?:

I need to train on the bike a lot. This was only my 6th time on the bike this year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

I got tied up coming into transition by runners briefly. Took a little longer to get the coat and gloves off.
What would you do differently?:

Wake up!. My head was out of the game. I needed to get some gear off on the way into transition so I am not wasting so much time.
Run
  • 28m 44s
  • 3.65 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt fine for the run. I tried to settle in a little bit but I just felt slow.
What would you do differently?:

I need to open up my pace on the run. I am capable of a lot more speed. I need to stop saving energy and crank it up.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a little bit and confirmed that the run was really short. I had a couple bottles of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It really showed that I haven't been training and I need to get serious.

Event comments:

This race was very well done. There were a lot of volunteers and staff. The roads and trail were great. The water was too cold but the lake seemed very nice.

I'm not sure if I would do this race again. Everything was great except for the cold water.

I need to train more over the next weeks and get ready for the next one.
