Pre-race routine:

Drove to race site - met up with a couple of friends, registered. Set up transition - since I was the first one at my rack I got the good position at the end of the rack.
Event warmup:

Chatted with friends. Peed. Drank a little water. Swam out to the first buoy about 15 min before the start.
Swim
  • 15m 41s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good swim despite my poor positioning at the start. I was in the middle of many, many people - most of which were not sure where to go I think. My bad for not scouting out a better start position. Once we rounded the first buoy things opened up and I got into a groove. I was pretty happy with my sighting during this race.
What would you do differently?:

Pick a better position to start in. Historically I have been best served by starting near the rear, but in this race that hurt me. Other than that I'd probably scope out people who are warming up and find somoene who is more my speed and work with them during the swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Had problems getting into my shoes and getting my bike off the rack. My feet were suprisingly clear of dirt.
What would you do differently?:

NOT close the velcro on my shoes before I put my foot into the shoe. I would also make sure that my transition bag is not under my wheel after setting up transition - that would make unracking much easier.

Comments:

What a great bike course. Very well marked out, no really challenging hills, fast pavement. The hardest thing on this course was the very sharp second turn - I imagine that some people went shooting off into the ditch. The only issue with the course is the speed bump in the first 500 m on the way out to the road - I saw one person who wiped out on it despite the warnings they gave to us.
What would you do differently?:

There were 2 hills that I didn't gear appropriately for. The final hill on the course caught me off guard and I lost some time on it (and was passed by 4 people who probably need to re-read the drafting rules) - I just tried to mash up it and killed myself and I know better than *that*. I probably would have pushed a little harder on the first half of the bike course had I been able to scout out in advance.
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Horrible dismount. I need to learn how to pull my feet out of my shoes while riding into T2 rather than trying to unclip and stop. I swear I'm going to kill myself one of these times. Thankfully the rest of my T2 went very, very well. I am very happy with under 1 min
What would you do differently?:

Practice dismounting. At least I didn't bnearly break my ankle on this one.
Run
  • 28m 51s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

What a tough 5k this was for me. I have not done any real trail running this year and I have not done any 5k training either. I was taken aback with the steepness of some of the hills but forged on. I was aiming for a 30 min run, so I am happy with this one along with the second half being 1:20 faster. I am pleased with my time for this tough 5k.

The set-up folks did a great job marking out the big roots and covering up nasty spots with some filler to make the wet course much safer for all.
What would you do differently?:

Hit a few trails for some trail running experience.
Post race
Warm down:

drank water and walked around catchimg my breath. Got out of my wet shoes and put my sandals on.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Half Ironman training is not the best thing for improving your sprint time. This was a good practice run for the HIM in 3 weeks.

Event comments:

A very well run race - I would recommend it to anyone. Set-up did a great job with everything. Two suggestions for next year - rope off the pavement between the TA transition to the trail for the beginning of the run course. WAY too many people were wandering around in the way of the athletes who were starting out on the run. Second - it would have been nice for another 3-5 feet of road to run on - since we shared the road with the bikers it had the potential to be dangerous, but just a little more pavement for the run would have been mich nicer.
