Swim
Comments: I finally put a decent swim on the board in a race. I forced myself to control my pace at the start and settled into a nice easy rythm and built it throughout. Passed a ton of people along the way, stopped for a breaststroke here and there to look for gaps in the crowd, finished strong and had complete composure and easy breathing when I arrived at T1. I think the distance may have been a little shorter than advertised based on my expected pace. What would you do differently?: I couldn't have executed this swim better. Transition 1
Comments: Coming out of the water in good shape makes a world of difference! I had a nice rack location that was handy to the in/out so that helped a lot too. What would you do differently?: nothing. Bike
Comments: I did about what I hoped to do on the bike. I kept up with some better cyclists for most of the ride until they flew through the uncontrolled intersection on yellow. Had I followed, you would not be reading this report. This was really the only disappointment I had with the entire day. Since there was ample support from volunteers and police presence at every strip mall and donut shop along NASA Rd 1 and 146, how can there be NO CONTROL and not a single cone at a major intersection like this? Well, let's just look at the bright side and say at least no one got killed. As it was, I lost 90 sec to 2 minutes here and never saw the fast dudes again until the run. Bummer. What would you do differently?: Not a thing I could have done better. I've been putting in a lot of miles trying to get my biking up to respectability and it's starting to pay off. I needed this race to show myself that I can push the pace for longer stretches. I'm getting there... Transition 2
Comments: No cute stuff here. Just dashed in like I had valet parking, grabbed the shoes and out the gate. What would you do differently?: nothing. Run
Comments: I was hoping to go 48 or so here, but I never could get my hips and hams to shake loose, so I kept my stride in check and paced it. What would you do differently?: In hindsight, I should have turned it up a couple of notches and run my pace. I need more experience with this distance to better gauge how much is left in the tank. I think I was scared I would blow up and waste a perfectly decent swim and bike. Should have known better. Post race
Warm down: No beer? What limited your ability to perform faster: One of these days I'm going to arrive at a race with a good night's sleep. This wasn't the day... Event comments: I like this distance. Being predominantly a swimmer, I like to see the swim be a little more material part of the race. Weak swimmers can't bluff their way through a 1500m course without spotting you 5-10 minutes. Revenge! Last updated: 2009-05-08 12:00 AM

Decided to spend the night in Clear Lake in order to sleep a little later and be fresh for the race. Met my buddy James and looked around the transition area and went to dinner. The downpour that ensued knocked the power out at my hotel so I organized my gear in the flickering light, no A/C! The power remained out all night, so the sleep sucked and I finally gave up and had some coffee and a crunch bar at about 0400 and diddled around for an hour or so before heading to transition. Racked the bike and paced about like a caged cheetah.
Too tired to do much but chat with the other racers and finally swim a couple hundred before we staged for the start.
