Comments: Lots of feet and elbows at the start. Good to get that experience in. Kept my goggles under the cap just in case. Disappointed in my performance. The suit felt too tight in the shoulders. I'd like to try a sleeveless suit. I never got in a groove out there. I was breathing almost exclusively on my right side (though I typically do bilateral breathing in practice). Also, I was breathing almost every stroke from the start - a symptom of nerves more than anything. Many times I noticed my stroke technique was off (especially as I finished my stroke). One positive aspect is that I felt well conditioned for the distance. In fact, I could have pushed myself a little harder. I also felt I sighted a little better than in races past, but that's not saying much. What would you do differently?: Practice in open water. I need to incorporate speed drills in my work outs. Also, practice bilateral breathing by alternating sides per pool length rather than stroke to get more comfortable breathing on my left side if need be. ![]() Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Sighting still off. I noticed that I was swimming closer to the shore than most others. The current may have been a little faster further out in the river. I guess I'll never know, but I've heard some swimmers say that. Event comments: Well organized and fun. Great schwag bag! A great way to start off the open water season. Note the water temp. Although there were a number of people with no wet suits, I have to believe they were very uncomfortable. I saw at least three people being treated for hypothermia at the end of the race (granted, they all beat me). Last updated: 2009-05-09 12:00 AM
