Swim
Comments: My swim was actually as good as it could be based on my swimming ability and training. Right before the gun some guy was waving his arms and accidentally clobbered me in the head. I was stunned for a bit and wasn't quite sure what hit me. I thought that stuff was supposed to happen after the race starts! :) What would you do differently?: Learn how to swim... Put my face in the water. Transition 1
Comments: Coming out of the water I tried to pull my swim cap off my head from the top instead of from the side and it kind of suctioned to my head and made me look like a cone-head. In transition my shirt stuck on my wet body and I couldn't quite get it on. What would you do differently?: Practice transitioning, learn to run with the bike and put shoes on while riding. Bike
Comments: I felt great heading out and was really flying on the bike. For some reason I thought the race distance for the bike was going to be 12 miles, so when I got to the 6 mile mark and we didn't turn around I kind of panicked and lost focus. Heading back I really noticed the headwind and hills. I mentally broke down and my average speed slowed. I was still happy my average speed was over 20 mph., but I was kind of hoping to get an average speed of around 22 mph. What would you do differently?: More time on the bike training. Read the race information carefully. Transition 2
Comments: I wish I had a better bike rack spot so I didn't have to run so far in my bike shoes with my bike. Also, I felt really slow putting on my racing flats and tying them. I should probably invest in some speed laces. What would you do differently?: Buy speed laces for my shoes and get to the event earlier to get a better transition spot. Run
Comments: The run is my strength. I ran okay. I was hoping to get in the 18's or better, but I kind of lost focus and didn't push myself as hard as I should have. My stomach started cramping up during the last mile of the run. What would you do differently?: I don't know... Post race
Warm down: I just walked around, stretched lightly, drank some water and ate part of a bagel. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of experience. Event comments: This was a really good race with lots of tough competition (especially in my age group). I loved that it was close to home. I'll certainly compete in this one again. Up at 5 A.M. ate a granola bar, took a shower to wake up and headed to the course around 5:45-6:00. We got there later than I had wanted to, so I kind of go a crappy transition spot. After body marking I just kind of chilled and tried to settle my nerves. This was my 2nd triathlon and 2nd open water swim.
Nada. Just some light stretching.
