Age Group Rank = 46/81
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15. Breakfast- 2 hard boiled eggs, grapefruit and grapefruit juice.

Arrived @ venue at 5:45. Body marked and set up transition. Was able to take my time in transition, so no stress here.
Event warmup:

Did some light stretching starting about an hour prior to the race and also did about 100yd swim to get a feel for the open water.
Swim
  • 07m 32s
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started near the front of the wave. Some swimmers caught up and passed me but I also did my share of passing. Not sure if I would start in the front at the next OWS. Got blocked coming out of the swim by a couple of swimmers from the 25-29 AG. Probably cost me at least :30. Pleased with my sighting although I never got comfortable swimming with my head down.
What would you do differently?:

Not start out so fast. I used up a lot of energy early and made for a rough return back.
Transition 1
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

Pleased with this transition for the first time out.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure where or how I could really improve much right now...just the basic "do it again" in a race setting.
Bike
  • 44m 28s
  • 11.1 miles
  • 14.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Definitely better than anticipated. Was nervous about the hills, but I think I handled them very well considering there's not a lot of hills to practice. Kept a good pace throughout.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Came into T2 and went through the men's racks before getting to the women's. Probably didn't cost too much time, but I should have been more aware.
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention, focus.
Run
  • 23m
  • 2 miles
  • 11m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt like I did better than the time showed. Slower pacing than I hoped for, but I also have to consider the hills. I have not run or trained on any hills, so it was a different experience. Taking the last hill coming to the finish was a challenge. I tried to push down the final stretch but my HR was redlining and I was wheezing a little bit, so I just maintained my pace.
What would you do differently?:

Run hills. Run more. Run longer.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing really. Ate some fruit, drank some water and had a massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience. Probably should have been training longer distances. I think the training plan I used wasn't as intense as I needed. I still need to lose 15 more pounds to get to a comfortable racing weight.

Event comments:

Well run and well organized. Great volunteers and a tremendous atmosphere of spectators.
