Pre-race routine:

At a semi-normal breakfast pretty early since I drove the 2 hours down to Richmond. First race so I don't exactly have a routine.
Event warmup:

Swam a little bit to get used to the current in the river. It was moving pretty quick, so that took a while to get used to.
Swim
  • 26m 23s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Current was STRONG, so that beat me mentally, luckily there were rocks in the river so I could rest some. I actually had to rest on a Kayak after sucking in some water. I started out fine, but I got stuck behind a weak swimmer and it was all downhill from there. I wasn't going to try to swim over him, but ended up getting swum over in the process. This was much tougher than the previous OW swim that I had done.
What would you do differently?:

Trust in my training, I probably would have been fine if I just believed I wasn't going to float away, lol.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

I was zapped from that zany swim, so I was calm and cool. I think the transition was a little over 2 minutes
Bike
  • 1h 54m 3s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 9.81 mile/hr
Comments:

This is pretty close to my training speed anyways. I usually go around 9-10 mph when I'm biking on tougher courses and slower on the really tough ones. This was a fairly challenging course, not the hardest, but not easy either.
What would you do differently?:

I was kind of redlining it after the swim section. Just moving along at an easier pace had me up around 160-170bpm, and that's just not sustainable. For now considering my abilities on the bike, I think I did a good job.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Run
  • 1h 10m 31s
  • 6.8 miles
  • 10m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran pretty slow, but I actually wanted to cool my heart down since it was so pegged during the bike. At this time I just wanted to be able to finish the race, as it was a tough day.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around a lot, drinking water, eventually went to go put everything back in my car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Freaking out on the swim. My whole plan was to take the swim at a comfortable pace so I can get to the other events with some good energy. This was a brain fart by me, but it was my first time so I'm not beating myself up for it. I'll probably not be so nice on the swim next time, hehe.

Event comments:

I'm rating it too hard, but I did finish. I was just waaay back in the pack. This is a pretty competetive event, probably more than the next one I plan. PLus that one is shorter

Course: This was a pretty tough mountain bike course. It's in an urban setting, but it's still got plenty of challenges along the way to keep even some of the most skilled bikers interested. There were some sections of gravel/smooth going, but not as much as I had previously thought.

Course: Not a super difficult beginning of a run, but was in a lot of sunlight. The Mayan ruins come up about 2.5-3 miles in, that's a fun climb. It's got to be close to a 45 degree angle on that one, so that's a steep hill. Eventually the course finished in some single track on Belle Isle, but by then I was pretty tired.
