Swim
Comments: Pretty rough out there. Where I live there is no open water close and nothing that gets as rough as at High Cliff but I am a fairly strong swimmer and open water does not freak me out so just chugged along, felt pretty good. Could have pushed harder but had a long day ahead. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: Went slow to get heart rate down after running up hill. Bike
Comments: Nice ride, had some wind pushing back up Lake Shore Drive. I stuck to my nutrition plan better than last time. I cut an uncrustables of my sons into quarters to get something solid in which tasted very good. The wind near the end kicked my ass a bit but I have never been very stong on the bike. I was hoping to keep average over 20 but wasn't meant to be What would you do differently?: Push a bit harder, I tend to space out on long rides and let intensity drop. Transition 2
Comments: I took a lot longer than usual here. Wanted to make sure to sunscreen and get a good drink in. Also had to put on socks and a ace compression brace on the right ankle. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: Here is where things got interesting. I have been having trouble outside right ankle since the Green Bay marathon, ligament I believe. My brother that I am doing Louisville full (first one) in August reminded me to walk a lot or DNF if it feels like it worsens. I haven't quit yet and the thought of that is not something I want to entertain. Last year High Cliff was my first half and half way up the hill both quads seized up on me and made for a miserable day. I wanted to test my fitness so I ran the hill and was very pleased that all felt great in my legs and the ankle was uncomefortable but tolerable. I kept thinking how surprised I was with how good I felt. Then stupidity set in. I know I needed nutrition but nothing sounded good. I had two hammer gels on me but refused to comsume and besides I felt good. Then mile 8-9 the wheels came off and my good day went bad. Had to walk/run it in, I know better, just lost my mind. Those last few miles I remember telling myself I should stick to sprints. What would you do differently?: Use my head and stick to my plan!!! Post race
Warm down: Couldn't eat so just walked around until I felt better. Was fun watching my friend Charlie finish his first half strong. Talking to him reminded me not to get down and why we do this. Event comments: Hopefully I learned from my mistakes. We will find out in 12 months. Last updated: 2009-05-11 12:00 AM
