Run
Comments: Took off down the hill with the crowd, realized at the half mile mark that I was way too fast. Settled into a nice pace for the rest of the segment. Lost a lot of time on the trail section with the roots and logs across the trail and the steep ups and downs. What would you do differently?: Train on trails and hills more. Transition 1
Comments: I don't remember fixing lunch! What would you do differently?: Not take a nap! Bike
Comments: Took off fairly easy until we got out of the park and settled into a nice rhythm heading south. Unfortunately the bulk of the hills were in the section along with facing a pretty stiff head wind. Once I turned west and then back north, I enjoyed the nice tailwind and the stronger pace. What would you do differently?: My bike training has been lacking until the last 10 days or so. Need T.I.T.S.! Transition 2
Comments: Better, but still not good enough. Run
Comments: Got off the bike and I could tell that this wasn't going to be easy and it wasn't. What would you do differently?: More hills and trails in training. Transition 3
Comments: Still improving! Took shoes on and off standing which seemed to help. Bike
Comments: About this time I was wishing I had signed up for the shorter race! Took a gel once I got out onto the main road. The winds were picking up going south and the hills didn't get any easier. But the wind was good going back north. What would you do differently?: I got a new wheel and PT the week before this race and instead of switching the 12-27 onto it, I put the 11 - 23 on. In hindsight, maybe not such a good idea for this course. Transition 4
Comments: Best of the day, but still needs improvement. Run
Comments: My calf started cramping and knotting up as soon as I left transition. So I settled into a comfortably slow pace. I walked the steep trail sections and tried to push the pace on the road and smoother section. Really nothing left in the tank for this run! Post race
Warm down: Stretched and walked around sipping some water. Loaded up the gear and headed to the cabin for awards and a snack. What limited your ability to perform faster: The weight I put on in CA. Lack of bike training. Lack of hill training. Lack of trail training. But this race was a last minute decision and although I didn't meet my expectations, I wasn't far off. I know where I am at in my training this season and realize the work I have to do! Event comments: Well run race and the crew that puts this on is experienced and it showed! I ate breakfast and loaded up the car to head to the race site.
Took my stuff over and set up transition. Met up with Rob and Jackie, plus a couple of other friends doing the race. Easy run around parking lot.
