Pre-race routine:

Got there at about 6:25-6:30. Long walk with the bike and other gear from the parking alot across footbridge and beach to the transition area. That was a workout in itself!
Event warmup:

Jogged a little and then got the wetsuit on to warm up in the water. Ended up going back in a few times to stay warm and kill time with the delayed start. Swim warm up was probably longer than the swim itself ended up being.
Swim
  • 06m 32s
  • 250 yards
  • 02m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt ok even though I ended up near the back overall. Really didn't get any rhythm going the whole way. Kind of a blur.
What would you do differently?:

Tough to tell because the swim was so short. I'll work more on the open water swimmimg before my next triathlon and time myself during training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Bike
  • 53m 36s
  • 15 miles
  • 16.79 mile/hr
Comments:

Need to work on cornering and climbing. I've done a few sprint triathlons. I feel this was probably the hilliest bike course of them all.

Almost got blown off the bike coming down that first hill before you leave the park. That wind off the water was strong!
What would you do differently?:

Traing on hills and cornering. Since this is an early season race, I didn't have much time to traing outside. I'll use this race to focus on what I need to for later races. Hopefully next race I'll do better with the extra training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Just racked my bike. Had to remember to use both the front and back slots for the wheel. For some reason I tried to balance the bike in just one slot. Duh! My bad.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much. I think MAX is the only company that uses that wooden slot racking system as opposed to the metal rods at the other ones. I'm not sure my schedule will allow me to do anymore of their races this year.
Run
  • 23m 37s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

First hill out of transition was brutal. Once I was past that I felt ok.
What would you do differently?:

Hard to say. Felt steady all the way after the first hill. It was windy though on that last stretch on the footbridge.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Had to leave to make it to brunch for Mother's Day!

Thought I would have more time, but because of the delayed start, I had to rush right out. Long walk back to my car - almost got blown off the footbridge again walking back!

Event comments:

It must be tough to run these races. You can't please everyone. My only suggestion is they could have made a decision earlier on the shortened swim.

I read something about a delay waiting for the EMT truck to arrive, so maybe that was it, in addition to the buoys being blown off course. In any event, no one seemed to know what was going on until we were informed the swim was being shortened about 45 minutes after the scheduled start.

Course: I felt it was much harder than last year. The hill at the start coming out of the park and the hill after coming back into the park were almost as hard as the hill right before you hit route 85 again at the latter part of the course. One thing that concerned me during training (I biked it once before the race) and during the race was the bumps as you leave and reenter the park. You couldn't avoid them as they were all the way across the road. I kept thinking I might get a flat.
