Total Time = 6h 36m 3s
Overall Rank = 672/1045
Age Group = Clydesdale 15-3
Age Group Rank = 13/23
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:00..whole wheat bagel, peanut butter, ensure, clif bar, banana.
Event warmup:

Headed into the surf for a little freestyle warm-up and to test out the waves.
Swim
  • 41m 34s
  • 2640 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was certainly difficult. The waves really picked up out at the turn bouy but the waves in helped out a lot.
What would you do differently?:

I rounded the second bouy too sharp and was in the mix the whole way back. Made it difficult to get into a good rythym. Would have moved outside a little.
Transition 1
  • 05m 3s
Comments:

This was my very first transition, so I was certainly a little hesitant. Wanted to ensure I didn't forget anything. When I pulled my bike off the rack my aero bottle fell right off. I guess the velcro got caught. I left the bottle (had three other bottles with gatorade and hammer).
What would you do differently?:

Would have more carefully checked my aero bottle when setting up transition. Also would have moved with more speed
Bike
  • 2h 56m 47s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.01 mile/hr
Comments:

The ride was pretty good. However, I wish that the logging road was smoother. This would have allowed a harder push in that leg.
What would you do differently?:

Checked my aero bottle and been a little more aggressive.
Transition 2
  • 04m 51s
Comments:

Again, new to transitions. Had to wait to hit the bathroom. Getting ready to head out and then remembered that I forgot my hammer salt tabs, so had to head back to my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Taken a little more time to make sure I didn't leave my tabs.
Run
  • 2h 47m 49s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Not only was this my first triathlon, this was also my first half-marathon. I have been battling IT band injury in both my legs for the past five months, so I did not have the stamina that I would have liked for the run. The IT band flared up around mile five so I had to just muscle through it for the rest of the course
What would you do differently?:

Eased up on my run training to try to allow the IT band to heal so I could put more mileage in towards actual race day.
Post race
Warm down:

One bottle of water and one bottle of cytomax, stretching and of course pictures

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This being my very first triathlon certainly limited my performance. Learning your personal pacing under race conditions was hard. The weather and my IT band also contributed heavily

Event comments:

I feel fairly good about the race since this was my first. I will be back next year and hopefully put up better numbers. Check back then.

Course: The course in general was pretty good. We had a nice tail-wind heading out that allowed me to pick up some time. However, the logging road that comprised a large part of the ride was horrible. I was a little reserved trying to make sure I didn't get a flat on my first time out
