Pre-race routine:

Double-checked transition bag, had a mini breakfast, and just got myself mentally ready.
Event warmup:

Lots of stretching & body looseners.
Swim
  • 18m 31s
  • 805 meters
  • 02m 18s / 100 meters
Comments:

I felt great about this swim. it was a self-seeded wave start and I went in wave 4. I passed a lot of people, had a few of the normal open water issues with passing people and current, but otherwise I think I rocked this. I was really pleased with my time and I feel I'm getting better with open water.
What would you do differently?:

Go a little bit faster as I go along. Start out slower & more comfortable but dont be afraid to just go all out towards the end.
Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Finally getting more efficient at transitions. This one was nice & quick.
What would you do differently?:

Gummy Bears!
Bike

  • 14.29 mile/hr
Comments:

Oh, this was just horrible. I got my first flat ever in a race. And of course I had my patch kit but no pump. I was so very mad. Mad at myself for not packing a spare tube or pump. Mad at my luck for this happening when I had such a good swim. I was so rocking the bike, averaging a good 23+ mph and then at mile 3.5 *pop*. I went through all the emotions, anger, frustration, sadness, and as I was walking my bike back my Knight on Shining Bike came to save me. A random racer (#163) pulled over and offered to help. He happened to have a spare tube and CO2 and he had just fixed a flat on his own bike and didn't mind adding an extra 5-10 minutes to help me out too. I'm lucky it wasnt a USAT race so we weren't disqualified. I had basically accepted my DNF fate, and he came along and saved me. My bike time could've been so much better and I honestly believe I would've made top 10 or higher if this misfortune hadn't happened. Live and learn. And major kudos to 163. If I ever get the chance to pass this great karma along to someone else in another race I'm totally doing so. Its all because of him that I was even able to finish.
What would you do differently?:

PACK A SPARE TUBE AND SOME CO2 OR A PUMP!!!!
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

I was trying to make up time from the bike so I just flew through T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. this was great.
Run
  • 40m 22s
  • 4 miles
  • 10m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt great about this run. I thought I was running faster than I was, but I felt good and I was just so excited to be finishing. By mile 3 I decided to just let it all out and just go as fast as I could. And I even passed someone! for the first time ever in a race I passed someone on the run!! :)
What would you do differently?:

I was so worried about making up time that I didnt spin at the end of the bike so my legs were a little tight in the beginning.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, had a banana and some water, some mild stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Flat tire and being unprepared for it!

Event comments:

I enjoyed this race. at first I was disappointed b/c of the frustrations of bad directions and no free swag :( but the director was fantastic and dispite my flat I still rocked the course to the best of my ability. The crowd was so supportive and loud and I was so happy to have finished. My time sucked, but I still did my very best and I'm really glad to have finished. I feel great about this race :)
