Swim
Comments: I had trained pretty hard on the swim and felt fairly confident in my ability, but that all came to a stop as soon as our wave went off. I don't think I was in a good position in the pack, should have stayed on the outside. The cold didn't bother me and the open water didn't bother me, but all the dang bodies that were flailing around did! I ended up back-stroking, side-stroking, crawling, and breast-stroking until it was over. I decided most people couldn't see how ridiculous I looked from shore so I was just trying to get it done after that first turn. What would you do differently?: Work on swimming with other people in the open water more. Get a different position in the pack. Don't drink the water so much! Transition 1
Comments: I was actually okay with how this all went down since it was my first time. I did put a long sleeve shirt on in the transition (which I debated about prior to the race), but I am glad I did. I do not need socks, so that wasn't an issue, the wetsuit came off fairly well and I didn't try to leave T1 without my helmet so all in all, I think it went well! What would you do differently?: Maybe work on multi-tasking a little more, but I can't complain. Bike
Comments: This is actually my favorite out of all three, so I was really looking forward to the bike. Notice I didn't say "best" of all three, just favorite. I'm not sure if I have a best! I have no complaints about the bike. I want to learn how to improve my time and push a little harder, but I was comfortable comsidering I usually wear gloves and biking shorts! I left the gloves off and just wore compression shorts. What would you do differently?: Just push myself to go faster and harder. But overall, I had no idea what to expect in this race so now that I have a little experience, I know better that I am capable of pushing a little more. Transition 2
Comments: I didn't try to do any fancy schmancy transition tricks like taking my feet out or dismounting before I stop the bike. I figured that was a disaster waiting to happen! I just wanted to be in control and keep my wits (spelling?) about me. I was happy that I got off the bike smoothly and was sort of able to run the bike to the rack. My lower legs and feet were numb, so it was hard to tell if I was running, skipping or walking! I'm sure it looked entertaining to spectators. I don't run with socks so I was just able to get my feet out of bike shoes and fairly easily get into the running shoes, numb and all! What would you do differently?: Maybe learn to take my feet out of shoes before dismounting. Just more practice in general. Run
Comments: Ouchie!!!! Right out of transition my legs were not good. I was so wobbly and felt numb. I wasn't sure I'd make it through the 5k without walking a major portion. I made it to the small hill to the trail and decided to walk that part. I got into my slow paced run and got my legs back about 3/4 mile in. It started pouring pretty hard, but suprisingly, didn't bother me. I knew I was doing a 10 min mile which I was okay with. It seems to be where my run is stuck right now. But I was able to run the rest and got more motivation/kick as I came to finish. It was so cool to finish that race and especially to see my friends and family waiting for me. What would you do differently?: I really need to speed up my run. I would love to be at a 9 min mile. Need to work on that. Post race
Warm down: Got my hugs, took some pictures and got my clothes changed. I grabbed a burritto and headed home. I was looking for Donkey Folk, but couldn't spot them. Wish I had met a few of you, but maybe next time! Proceeded to gord on Cold Stone later in the day. ;) What limited your ability to perform faster: Probably the cold, the fact that I was a newbie and just lack of fitness for races like this. Event comments: This has been something I have wanted to do since I was in college (10+ years ago). For whatever reason, I decided this was the time and I am so glad I did. As slow as my time may seem, I was actually just elated that I had completed it and actually got through it smoothly. I think this is something I would like to continue, so we will see where it goes in the future! Last updated: 2009-05-13 12:00 AM

Wouldn't exactly call this a routine since I had never done this before! I just got up at 4:30, had toast with PB, 1/2 banana and OJ. Packed up the car with hubby and drove to race. Wasn't as nervous as I thought I'd be at all. I think I had come to the realization that I had done all I could do to prepare for this and it would be what it would be. Found what I thought to be a good spot on the rack, checked in, and set-up. I really am not sure why I am admitting this, but I actually started putting my wetsuit on backwards! I had it all the way up to getting my hands in the sleeves before I realized what I was doing. I think my hubby has pictures! Ugh! I am so blonde somedays!
Just went for a little run to the trail and back to the transition area. Then proceeded to get my wetsuit on (backwards on attempt number 1) and go for a warmup swim.
