Swim
Comments: I was much more disoriented than I've been in previous open water (lake) swims. This was my first ocean swim, and I think the water was moving a lot more than I thought it was, and I spent a lot of energy keeping my body position and fighting to swim straight for the buoys. It seemed they were always just a little to the left, and that I was always on the outside of the group, which was frustrating. At one point, I was thinking I'd missed a buoy, and in the 3rd quarter of the race I was convinced I was the last person in the water since I'd been passed by so many people in the first stretch. What would you do differently?: Train harder, start further back (this group was much faster than a typical triathlon swim group, I think), think more positively about my progress, challenge myself to swim harder earlier on, especially between the 2nd and 4th buoys. Post race
Warm down: Wiped the grime off my chin, threw on a shirt, and grabbed some pizza for my hungry daughter. Drank water/gatorade. What limited your ability to perform faster: Initial shock at the cold, even with the warm up, discouraging thoughts, disorientation, (mostly due to) lack of training. Event comments: This was a lot of fun. I'd probably have more fun if I were there with other people I knew. If I have the chance to do it again, I'll probably try the two-mile. I have new respect for people who swim in the ocean. This was a pretty sheltered cove, and it was such a different experience than lake swims I've done. Also, if I do it again, I'm definitely going to the massage tent. My back muscles were really sore today, in a way that doesn't usually happen when I swim! Last updated: 2009-05-13 12:00 AM

Race wasn't until 1 pm, so I ate breakfast at around 8:30, had coffee, and then tried to drink a lot of water all morning. We showed up at around 12:15, I signed in and warmed up. I'm glad I did, because the salt water and the ocean temperature, even in the cove, took some getting used to (no wetsuit).
