Total Time = 6h 06m 37s
Overall Rank = 748/915
Age Group = 4549
Age Group Rank = 68/106
Pre-race routine:

Print out a checklist off the Beginners Triathlete site - pack up bike and go to Registration - come home and finish race kit - salad, brown rice and protein for dinner - plenty of hydration - start drinking electrolytes from midday the day before
Event warmup:

Get into the water 10 minutes before the swim and get used to water temperature and conditions
Swim
  • 43m 22s
  • 1900 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

My navigation was poor - I felt good in the swim did TI swimming - but I feel I need to work on my swimming as I can't pace myself and my time was back of the pack
What would you do differently?:

More endurance swimming in lakes and pools - longer sessions and more technique - get a new wetsuit - this one is over 22 years old and cuts me which is uncomfortable and painful when salt water gets into it
Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

Had trouble getting out of the suit and getting into my shoes and socks- had to pack my pockets with gel and my new aero bottle was loose
What would you do differently?:

learn how to set up bike in transition better - practice fast starts - maybe a new wetsuit
Bike
  • 2h 54m 29s
  • 90 kms
  • 30.95 km/hr
Comments:

Good solid ride - first time raced over this distance - the aero bottle needed the elastic bands- was good to have but more research would have been better
What would you do differently?:

more long rides and some hills- train with faster riders - I did too much riding on my own and didn't get pushed by the group I rode with
Transition 2
  • 04m
Comments:

Good transistion - made a bad exit from the bike ran twice as far as I should -
What would you do differently?:

learn to get out of shoes on the bike so I can run bare feet

Make sure I know the exits
Run
  • 2h 19m 46s
  • 21 kms
  • 06m 40s  min/km
Comments:

I have been learning Chi Running and I think I went out too slow trying to relax into the run - my socks kept slipping and I stopped 3 times to fix them - I didn't really get onto my mid foot properly
What would you do differently?:

More longer runs using good technique - have tried and true socks
Post race
Warm down:

Long slow walk

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am still learning my swim and run technique and I am coming from a low base so I am still building

Event comments:

USM rock. They do great events - you know things will be as planned and if they are changed it is because the safety and comfort of the competitors warrant the change
