Cornhusker State Games
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 25m 5s
Overall Rank = 111/317
Age Group = Male 30-34
Age Group Rank = 11/26
Pre-race routine:

Shower, grab my snacks and drive to the race. Forced down a PB&J on wheat, and a banana. Wasn't hungry as usual, but I made myself eat and felt better. Drank about 8oz of water with the food.
Event warmup:

5min of swimming in the lake. Glad I did! Got rid of the pre race jitters and I found out my swim cap needed re-positioned. Water in the right eye after 4 strokes would not have been cool ;)
Swim
  • 17m 4s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim went well, considering this was my first OWS tri. Between the first and second bouy, I sighted and was at least 15yds to the right of the main pack. I was sure I was heading off course and sighted again. I was the only one making a straight line between the first two bouys. SWEET :)
What would you do differently?:

Start just a little harder, and try to pass a few people. I ended up just sitting on a guy's feet for a good portion of the swim, and I easily could have swam faster.
Transition 1
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

T1 went slick. Timing mat was 100yds from the swim, and I was in and out with no problems.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. T1 went perfectly.
Bike
  • 38m 40s
  • 12.99 miles
  • 20.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Course was fun. Just enough hills to slow down the non climbers and get a slight advantage for the bigger guys with weight on their side. Downhill is my friend :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I pushed pretty hard the entire time, and would back off just enough to stay aerobic. If I slowed a bit, I would tell myself "race your strength"....it worked.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Legs felt really heavy in T2... as is expected.
Lost my concentration as I got to my spot, and had to lift and turn my bike around to rack it. There goes 5sec...
What would you do differently?:

Rack the bike faster, and not pause and take a deep breath while doing nothing.
Run
  • 27m 21s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile was hard. I was looking at the water thinking I would rather swim again! I threw some water on my back at the second aid station and that helped.
What would you do differently?:

More Run Training.
Other than that, I am really happy with my time. This was probably my fastest 5k time yet, and I did not walk once.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate a 1/2 banana and 1/2 orange. Felt pretty good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The extra 20lbs+ I need to drop.

Event comments:

There are other lakes in the area that may be a better spot for this tri. Branched Oak would be a good possability. Overall though, this was a super fun race. I will do it again for sure.
