Pre-race routine:

I have been training since February with Team In Training for the NYC Triathlon. This was my very first triathlon and was using it to get "my feet wet" and maybe learn a few thing.
Swim
  • 10m 53s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

I felt good on the swim and was able to sight pretty well, but still could use some work on this. This was only my second time swimming in open water in a wetsuit, but I felt pretty comfortable. I finally was getting my groove about 3/4 of the way into a 1/4 mile swim and then it was nearly over.
What would you do differently?:

I would have gotten closer to the front, drafter on someone's feet and been a less polite when we headed into shore. I was too worried about hitting or bumping into others as we were exiting the swim. Will practice sighting more and do more open water in the wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

transition was pretty quick and seamless. Was able to shed my wetsuit easily. I didn't do any flying leaps onto the bike, but had no trouble clicking into the pedals and taking off.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 37m 31s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.19 mile/hr
Comments:

I went out hard on the bike. I also lost my water bottle during the race, in my second loop. I felt pretty good for the first two loops, but had a feeling that I should have backed off a bit in the third or I would pay for it on the run, but I didn't. I just kept hammering away.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time training hard effort on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Went pretty smoothly. Clipped out easily, but not a moving dismount. racked the bike, traded helmet for visor donned my race belt and watch, took a swig of water, since I had lost my other water bottle on the bike course and took off out of T2.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. The transition was quick and smooth, but I was still panting heavy from the bike when I took off. I was about to pay for it.....
Run
  • 30m 17s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I was hyperventilating when I left T2. I tried to slow my pace to catch my breath, but it didn't work. I finally just stopped for a minute to regroup then went off again. Felt a bit better, but it was tough. My legs felt weak, I felt hot and I had to pee like a racehorse. We haven't had any hot weather really to train in, so it was a bit of a shock. I did stop a couple of more times as I never really found my groove until the end (fat lot of good that did). I was so happy to cross the finish line and be done with it.
What would you do differently?:

I have done tons of bricks with longer bike intervals and been fine while training. I will admit it, I am a lousy runner. I do not like running and I like it even less after biking. However, I am determined to focus on some hard effort bikes and runs with what little time I have left before taper for the NYC Tri. I'll continue to work especially on running as that seems to be my weakest event. My swimming is ok, but has come a long way, so I need to put the same effort into the running and just keep moving ahead.
Post race
Warm down:

A trip to the restroom and a nice "mist" tent they had set up. Oh, pancakes and Dr. Pepper!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My lack of discipline in bike training and going out too hard on the bike in the race; it sabotaged my run.

Event comments:

I have nothing to compare this race too as it was my first. However, to me, it seemed well organized. I think the course was perfect for my first race, flat! It also helped me to understand transition better by actually doing it along with understanding how to better pace myself. It was a learning tool and I learned I need to focus more on my run in particular and hard efforts on bike.
