Swim
Comments: This was only my 4th open water swim. I really panicked after about the first 200 yds. I was thinking, "what the hell am I doing? I can't do this? where the hell are the kyaks?" I took a moment and rolled onto my back to get a grip and calm down. I was then able to continue. Honestly, I am still having trouble with the open water swim. It seems my chest feels heavy and I am more breathless than when I train in the pool. Not sure if this is a wetsuit, open water thing or nerves or all of the above. I managed to finish the swim....eventually. What would you do differently?: More open water swims in my wetsuit before the big day. Transition 1
Comments: Long ass run from the swim exit as I was in the far Transition area. Really wasn't tough on my feet at all and I didn't feel that bad running except for my back starting to act up. Stopped just outside of T1 to finish taking off my wetsuit )making use of the park benches for balance). The rest of the T1 was no problem. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: I was a bit preoccupied towards the end of the bike with how my back was going to feel once I straightened out. It was a constant distraction. I was about to find out in T2. What would you do differently?: Work harder, do more hills in training. Also more long distance rides. Transition 2
Comments: Once I got off the bike to run into T2 my back started screaming. It was ugly, but I managed to get my helmet and shoes off and put on my visor, race number and sneakers. Run
Comments: Pain, pain, pain. My upper thighs felt like they were ready to seize up, but I managed to run through that. My back however, was another issue all together. I was able to run the first two miles, but after that I had to run/walk to the finish. I was in so much pain, I wanted to cry (and quit, really, but how could I?). I alternated water and Cytomax at the aid stations and just tried to run until my back hurt again then walk until I felt a bit better, repeat. What would you do differently?: Let my husband unload the dishwasher the day before a race. I was running sub 1 hour 10K's in training. Granted, I'm no speedster, but I had hoped to accomplish at least that. Not possible. Post race
Warm down: Standing (ouch) around in pain waiting for my family and friends. Laying flat out on my LR floor at home with a cold beer (or two) What limited your ability to perform faster: Back injury the day before the race (in case it wasn't clear by now). Event comments: They started late due to weather conditions, this is understandable. I thought it was well organized, although this was my first year doing triathlons and only my second race, so not much to compare it to. Looking forward to next year! Woke up at 4:30 AM. Lightening, rain. Ate sprouted grain bread with almond butter, a banana and chocolate soy milk. Walked to the race since it was in my "backyard". Mild drizzle.
I trained for this race (my firt Oly) for 5 months and felt really prepared. However, I injured my back the day before the race unloading the dishwasher! Can you believe it? In any case, I did the race in über amounts of pain, how could I not after training for so long. I found out I have a herniated disc at L5-S1 and am in PT. Hopefully next year I can run this race healthily.
