Swim
Comments: I swam at my lowest possible effort, wanting to keep everything in reserve for the run. Because my wave was relatively small (Clyde/Athena/Relay) there was not as much traffic as the other waves. I had to adjust direction around swimmers here and there but it was fine - less than my other tri's. An enjoyable swim. I got out of the water and did not feel exerted at all. Said hello to my wife, and headed for the transition. What would you do differently?: I might consider putting the wet suit on next time just go get some speed for free, but was glad I did not use it. Transition 1
Comments: I was 100 feet away from my rack when I realized I had left my anti-bonk snack behind. This cost me some time! What would you do differently?: Better planning. Tape the snack to the bike. Order out? Bike
Comments: Took care not to burn my legs on the ride. I enjoyed it, nice and easy. There was a group of 4 of us who kept on leap frogging each other :-) Had some problems with shifting - why does Shimano 105 require so much tuning? What would you do differently?: I should have replaced my rear tire before the race. It is worn and is making too much contact with the road, I am sure it is affecting rolling resistance. Also, I think I might start using race tires instead of Continental Gator Skins which are bullet proof for training but not ideal for racing. Also, might consider renting race wheels just to see how much difference they make. Transition 2
Comments: Lisa and Marianne chewed me out for not running in T2. Ummm... thanks for that... I thought nobody was watching me slack off for a few minutes ;-) What would you do differently?: Run, so that Marianne and Lisa don't have to chew me out! Also, next time I'm going to tell the dude next to me that if he does not leave space for my bike it's probably going to end up in the dirt - seriously, it's just rude to park your bike half way into someone else's space and it wastes their time. Not cool! Run
Comments: I have to keep things in perspective here. I've made huge improvements over the year and even though my running is outright horrible compared to 90% of the people out there, I did run almost all of the 6 miles even though it was at a slow pace. Just 8 months ago I did not think it was even possible I could run 1 mile. Today I ran 6. And next year it's going to be a whole different ball of wax... I've got the whole winter to work on it. What would you do differently?: I need to find a reliable way to estimate pace. I could have gone maybe 1 or 2 minutes per mile faster but was very cautious of not getting burned out and hurting my back. Post race
Warm down: Just happy to have completed an Olympic distance! I was only supposed to do sprints this year but wanted to see what an Olympic was like. What limited your ability to perform faster: Running... and I am working on it... Although I have been putting in a decent training effort, maybe I should start doing some planning. Until recently I have been doing whatever activities will blow my hair back for the day. I need to get more organized for the longer distances. Event comments: I enjoyed it. Will be back! Had my usual breakfast & coffee. I was really glad that I stayed at the hotel instead of driving down, it was great to be in the transition area 20 minutes after leaving the hotel! I also enjoyed the dinner with the BT people - nice to see some old faces, and nice to meet quite a few new (to me) faces.
Swung my left arm around 3 times, swung my right arm around 4 times (this was a left turning course after all). Wiggled my shoulders approximately 1/2 a wiggle. All set.
