Comments: Midnight start. Need I say more? Ok, it was perfect conditions for speed. The heat of the prior 10 days broke on Friday and the humidity hadn't yet returned. I decided to go out near the front this time to avoid the weave and dust. It was a good call as the first time I checked the pace, I was running in the 8:30s. I decided that if the first lap went well, then I'd abandon any idea of negative splits and just work hard to maintain steady. I was pleased to see that laps 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 were just about the same pace, only falling off slightly in the 5th. My goal was 9 minute miles, which I obviously beat. The gu helped me fend off the crater in laps 3 and 4, which held me through lap 5. What would you do differently?: Well, I'll need to train a few more longer days if I am going to try for the 50k or even another marathon. My light training of about 5 miles 2x/week, with one "long" run of 9 a couple weeks before the race got me through the first 12 miles. The last 3 were serious work. ![]() Post race
Warm down: stretched, drank fluids, ate food tent food, had a beer and visited with the guy next to me. What limited your ability to perform faster: not much. Fastest Scorcho ever, by 25 sec/mile avg. I could have trained with a couple longer runs. Event comments: Race organizers even jokingly apologized that it really wasn't very "scorcho-like." Nobody seemed too concerned that it wasn't hotter or more humid. I love this race! It's just crazy fun. Last updated: 2009-05-15 12:00 AM
