Swim
Comments: Still takes me 34 minutes to get out of the water! Felt better and was trying to concentrate on good form for the entire swim. Sighting much better with only one time needed to breast stroke to get bearings (right after rounding last bouy). Exited quite wobbley and nearly fell over getting out of suit. What would you do differently?: Train more. Transition 1
Comments: Fiddled with glasses and helmet just a few seconds too long. What would you do differently?: Not worry about getting glasses "over" helmet straps. Run harder for the timing mat. Bike
Comments: Awesome ride. Only one person passed me during the last 5k and he was obviously a bike racer. Noted the "R" on his calf for "Relay Team" and let him go for a bit and then got a bit competitive and passed him back just to show I could. What would you do differently?: Not much. If anything I think, in retrospect, I could have hammered the return leg a little harder. Transition 2
Comments: Went smoother than I expected. No problems getting into shoes and race belt. Spent a few extra seconds pouring water into hat and taking a few gulps of remaining sports drink from bike bottle. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: I've been suffering from a chronic "stitch" in my right side for 2 weeks now. It is present even when I'm not running. It made an ugly occurance immediately when I left transition and slowed me down significantly. I spite of that, I ran down 5 guys in my age group. The last being 200 yards from the finish! Now that was fun. Of course, when I went by him I suddenly thought, "What if he chases?". I had no more left and just held on thru the finish. What would you do differently?: Not much. Post race
Warm down: Keep moving. I have to walk about for about 20 minutes before I can even think of doing anything else. I suck down fluids and wait for my insides to settle before hitting the "buffet" (grapes, bananas, plums, necterines and brownies) What limited your ability to perform faster: The stitch in my side was a major hinderance. I had the legs to run much faster but I just couldn't. Event comments: Awesome venue. Awesome organization. This was a USAT Regional Championship event. The race was open to 300 participants and really should have been full. If you want to do a challenging intermediate event at a great venue, then you should think about this one for next year. Up at 0430 to make sure I could finish eating 3 hours before the start. HUGE bowl of oatmeal with a little butter and molassas and a 550 calorie protein/meal replacement shake. Cup of de caf herb tea. Quick shower and and into race clothes. Now sit quietly and wait for mom and brother (event support team) to rise. Load bike and gear and drive to lake.
Not much into warming up. I see alot of people (guys mostly) running about with their shirts off. Conservation of energy, I say. Did actually get in the water before my wave and swam a 100 yards or so.
Anoint the wetsuit.
