Pre-race routine:

A little quite time
Event warmup:

Ran the first .75 miles of the course and truned around and back to transition. Road the bike to about the 1.5 mile mark on the bike course then back past the transition to check out the last turn and then back to the transition area.
Swim
  • 14m 46s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

There is a long up hill run to the transition. I over took the number 1 swimmer in the transition by 25 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

I hated swiming in the full wetsuite. I should have been better prepaired. I love what the wetsuit does for you but now that I have learned to swim over the winter, i hate the way the wetsuite feels. This could have been very eaily fix by doing a couple of open water swims to get use to the feel of the suit. I felt myself forgetting what I learned about reaching & rolling in the water. I kept taking little baby pulls, however I was kicking like a wild man. I have been doing this long enough to know better then to not practice the way you will race.
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

I found myself, telling myself "stop playing around and get out of the transition area and get those legs moving".
What would you do differently?:

I actually did something different. I road and ran without socks for the first time ever. Bike shoes, Cannondale Eclips, Running shoes, Nike Lunna Racers. I never once thought about the pre race decission to go this route. So it actually was a good plan. I put body gliude all over the top of the running shoes. ( the area that when the shoe is on, makes contact with your anckle), also one the underside of the tounge of the shoe (when the shoe is on this area makes contact with the top of your foot)
Bike
  • 31m 57s
  • 11 miles
  • 20.66 mile/hr
Comments:

The ride out of transition to the hiwy and returning back from the hiwy to transition is an old golf cart path that has alot of very big, very old trees lining it. The trees have not been kind to the path over the years and have made it very, very, very dangerous.
What would you do differently?:

See the section that I added for what I would do diffrent on the T1 section.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

I did not ride with feet on top of shoes, I did losen shoes so that when I dismounted I was ready to get out of my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on getting running shoes on wet feet with no socks. The shoes are so thin that when I tried to get them on, the top of the shoe (the top lace eye) on both shoes rolled to the inside of the shoe, so I had to fool with that.
Run
  • 24m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

See T1 coments about shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, This was a really good run for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Went for a 6 mile run after the race, Racing in the Rock & Roll half in 2 weeks so I needed the extra miles for the day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the fact that 90 % of my current training has all been done at Heart rate zone work. I.E. nothing really hard.

Event comments:

The race started about 7 minutes late, but the reason was becuase there was a big rain wave that pasted over and they wanted to see what was gong to happen with it.

Course: First .75 mile of the course is down hill. At about 1.25 there is a sharp climb for about .75 yards (it takes your breath away) then you make a left hand turn at the top and run out on to the top of a Dyke. The surface is a hard packed clay. Not bad at all. the turn around is half way down the Dyke. Then you have to go back down the breath taking climb, and when its wet it is nasty, it does not get much sun light durin gthe day because of the trees around it so the surface is covered in mold. The last .75 mile is up hill.
