Swim
Comments: This was my first OWS...I was amazed at how difficult it was to find some free space. Forget all m training, I should have focused on boxing as this was more important in this race. I had my leg yanked 3 times, causing me to take in water a few times. What would you do differently?: Need to work on alternating breathing every 3 strokes for better navigation techniques. Wesuit made swimming much easier though, perhaps a sleeveless would have been better though...may look into buying another for warmer temps. Transition 1
Comments: Wetsuit was new to me and got stuck What would you do differently?: Start practicing my transitions Bike
Comments: Everything started well till the first turn and lost a water bottle due to the potholes. Since I had two, I kept going...However, I lost the other bottle somewhere after this without my knowledge. This was a problem as I realized it only after I ate a GU...so on mile 2, no water and the taste of GU in my mouth - realized quickly this leg and likely cramping during the run would suck! What would you do differently?: I am not using the rear cage anymore for water bottles. Have ot figure something out...this was a massive problem and killed my strongest discipline. Transition 2
Comments: This transition was okay but I was badly dehydrated and already cramping...my focus was on hydration and energy for the run. Drank an entire water and ate a GU as I was running out of the transition What would you do differently?: Don't loose my water during my bike Run
Comments: SO I was badly cramping from the start...but pushed through this leg. I knew my times would suck but refused to give into the pain. Developed bad stitch and legs were cramping due to dyhydration mentioned above. Also had to pee badly but chose not to stop - perhaps a mistake. Was sort of affraid of the cops arresting me for public urination but this did occupy most of my thought process during the painful run. What would you do differently?: Not start the run dyhydrated Run at my normal pace Post race
Warm down: stretched, drank 2 gatorades to get more lectrolytes in my body What limited your ability to perform faster: Water on the bike, navigation during the swim and cramping during the run Event comments: Great race had some specific issues but will do it again next year Last updated: 2009-05-17 12:00 AM

Went to sleep around 11PM, had a few drinks (prob mistake) and was jetlagged from just getting back to US from a week in Germany without proper training. Also had Lasagna for dinner.
I realized I had several factors against me for this race but felt the training and experience would be outway the downside of being ill prepared for the race.
Woke up around 4:30AM due to long drive (1 1/2hrs), had an egg McMuffin sandwich and a yogurt on the drive with two bottles of water and an OJ.
Drank a Redbull energy drink (sugar free) at 6:3AM so the caffine would get into my bloodstream for the 8AM race start.
Setup my transition area, realized I forgot my towel. Tossed on the wetsuit and went for a .25mile swim on the course. Given this was my first OWS in my wetsuit, I wanted to get a feel. Found the water perfect and so much easier in the wetsuit than the pool.
