Swim
Comments: I stated in front and center this year. I felt good and loose.I started swimming during the countdown from 3. I sprinted out too fast. While this felt great, it caught up to me half way into the first stretch. I was winded and had to slow down and breaststroke a few times for a few seconds. After the 1st turn buoy, I settled down and felt really good. I was not winded at all during the far stretch, but didn't feel as though I could have gone faster. I sighted really well. I got caught up on a pile of swimmers on the back stretch which seemed to slow me down a bit. Slower than last year by 23 seconds. What would you do differently?: Not sprint all out in the beginning. This will allow me to swim stronger the whole way. Transition 1
Comments: I am guessing at this time. The new timing company screwed up and did not have T1 times. They combined T1 + Bike. What would you do differently?: I felt really good about this transition. I was mentally focused on T1 & T2 this year. Wetsuit off, shoes on, helmet on, sunglasses on, run with bike. That's it, no drinking or wasting time. Bike
Comments: Course was wet, it was raining for most of the bike. Some pretty strong cross-winds coming across the fields. The wet roads did not bother me much, I did not brake on the hills and turns, and passed a lot of people here. Although I probably shoud be worried about wet roads, but I am not. Wind on the other hand, is what bothers me. I feel as though I am a stronger cyclist than I was last year, but the conditions were not in my favor to PR on the bike. What would you do differently?: Just got to keep training. I will say that by far the majority of anyone who passed me (which were a lot)had some fancy, expensive wheels. Only 3 or 4 people who passed me had normal wheels like I have. Transition 2
Comments: I spun my pedals backwards coming into T2. This feels good and lets my legs rest and get ready to run. I don't take my feet out of my pedals and run barefoot. This isn't worth it to me. I'd rather run on the road surface in shoes. I ran all the way to my rack, helmet off, sunglasses off (ditched them at last minute due to no sun), bike shoes off, socks on (I really prefer running this distance with socks), shoes on, grabbed my race # belt and out the gate, and grabbed gatorade on the run. What would you do differently?: Not much here, just need to keep working on this. Run
Comments: I really wanted to run sub 50 minutes on this course. Which I did. I remember cramping really bad last year. My first mile was @ 7:30, then I felt a slight sting in my right quad which thankfully went away pretty fast. At 5k, I knew I had to keep pushing it to PR, and I did on the run. My goal was that after the final Gatorade wall, I would not let anyone else pass me. No one did. I honestly ran as had as I could to the finish. What would you do differently?: This run was good for me. Post race
Warm down: Gatorade, foil blanket and waiting for Lisa. Hot tub when we got home. What limited your ability to perform faster: I am no longer worried about completing this distance. I now have to include more high intensity and speed work into all aspects. Event comments: I was in the top 28% of my age group and top 19% overall, both are the best I have ever done here. I really wanted a 2:35, but dreaming of a 2:30. I won't blame the weather, or bike wheels, but with better weather and faster wheels, with my current conditioning, I can do it. I still feel really, really good about it. This is a tough course, and the conditions were not great. To come in 3 seconds slower than last year. Not bad at all. Last updated: 2009-05-18 12:00 AM

In bed at 9 PM. Woke up at 4 AM. Went for a quick 5 minute run around the block. Ate breakfast at 4:30 AM. 1 cup coffee, PB&J on Whole Wheat Bagel, glass of Powerade, 1/2 banana (I was full). Foam rolled and stretched a little. Showered. On the road at 5:20. Parking was just starting to fill up then.
Got to transition and body marked in plenty of time. I had almost an hour before I had to leave transition. Had plenty of time to set up, use the port-o-johns, stretch a little, get warm, and focus. I had time to think. Which made me nervous.
