Swim
Comments: Swam about as well as I could given my current fitness level. Started wide right. Swim must have been long compared to last year when i swan 26', but was ranked somewhat lower overall. Only weird thing was that I couldn't find my wetsuit zipper. First time in all of the races I've done... This year (11/90 ), last year (13/94), very similar results Transition 1
Comments: Normally, I'm really fast with this transition, but had problems today. Could not find my wetsuit zipper! Once I was heading out of Transtion, did a really bad job of getting into my shoes. R-tard. Bike
Comments: Man, I have definitely lost fitness on bike since last year. I rode 1:06 last year (40k). I clocked the 40k marker and I was at 1:11. Also, my relative ranking was lower (12AG/80OA) was much higher than last year (6/53)! I rode 22.6 last year and it felt easy. Though my quality sessions have been good, have definitley done 40% less volume and fewer hard group rides. Also, may have pushed it too hard, too early. I took HR samples ever few minutes to see how it changed over the course: (max/avg): 168/160, 162/155, 162/156, 162/160, 165/157, 161/158, 161/157, 159/156, 160/153, 163/155, 160/156, 157/149, 161/154, 159/149, 162/147, 159/150, 158/152, 150/141). My conclusion is that partly my mental focus wanned and partly my legs were getting tired. Also, seemed to be having stomach issues that led to some mild puking on bike. What would you do differently?: should have eased into race pace a bit. I went too hard, too early. Also, trained more! Transition 2
Comments: Felt pretty smooth on this one. Only way I could go faster is no socks and elastic laces Run
Comments: Ouch. This run was very hard for me. This was the slowest I've ever run for a 10k. Times overall seemed pretty slow - there were very few people under 40 mins. Last year I ran 40:48 (3AG/21 OA) this year was nearly 5' slower! (7/28). It was a good deal warmer than last year. Perhaps, the different run direction was tougher. Definitely the extra 5.2 miles on the bike took their toll. Splits were: 7:36 (165/158), 7:07 (168/162), 6:56 (168/166), 7:34 (170/165), 7:45 (170/165), 8:45 (for last 1.2) (170/166). Even though this was a bad run for me, I did pass a number of athletes who were reduced to a walk up the hills Alternated HEED and water at ever aid station What would you do differently?: Trained more! Probably went too hard on the bike Post race
Warm down: I really felt worked at the end of the race. Worse than Bandits and almost as bad as WLH. Drank a water, Ate some chips, had a pepsi. Got into lake to cool off. Had more chips, some beans and rice, and a hot dog. I was really struggling, but I felt like I really ran as tough as I could. I did lose some focus at the end of the bike, but what can you do??? What limited your ability to perform faster: Training! Event comments: Set-Up always does a great job. Last updated: 2009-05-18 12:00 AM
