Total Time = 7h 30m
Overall Rank = 366/579
Age Group = Novice
Age Group Rank = 12/39
Pre-race routine:

one slice of toast with peanut butter, half a banana on the drive down, and lots of water. Half a power bar 30 min before the race.
Event warmup:

2 mi bike to the race site, about 3-4 min of jogging.
Swim
  • 21m 54s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Quite a nice course. The motor boats zooming around 30 min before the start scared me a little, but it was clear when the race started. The water seemed to get more choppy as the waves went on, and also as the course went on. I think the support motor boats were sending out some annoying wakes. But overall, nice lake, well marked, lots of kayaks and canoes, and one of the cleanest lakes I've swam in in the area
What would you do differently?:

Go out a little harder, sight more, learn how to swim properly, eventually learn how to draft.
Transition 1
  • 04m 31s
What would you do differently?:

dont put on HRM, or at least make sure it actually takes HR data. Not sure if I want to leave my watch on the bike cuz I like looking at my time on the swim. Dont care emough at this point about my time to practice flying mounts and clipping my shoes into the bike before hand.
Bike
  • 57m 6s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 18.39 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little more. Try to ride a little more consistently and evenly instead of trying to pass everyone as fast as possible and then ending up leapfrogging some people.
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
What would you do differently?:

Not ride 3 feet past the dismount line like an idiot and total newb. It was a pretty fast transition considering zero practice, first tri, and not really hurrying.
Run
  • 22m 52s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty hot, but lots of water stations. Styrofoam cups- thumbs down
What would you do differently?:

Take more water. Only drank at 1 of the 5 or 6 aid stations. I dont think people realized how hot it was by 10 am.
Post race
Warm down:

walk and bike to car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Was too conservative on the swim, then bike took too much out of me, run was okay but pretty tired. For a first triathlon, not bad. Swim went way better than expected in any case. Have had that many miles on the bike to expect good things.

Event comments:

Parking and shuttles need some work, race started about 15-20 min late, but overall, a lot of fun.
