Pre-race routine:

up at 4 am. PB&J sandwich, drank some water. Arrived at 5:30, parked and walked to site (took about 15 mins). Set everything up and ready to go.
Event warmup:

Just ran for a few minutes, probably should have done more. Nowhere really to ride the bike. Did some stretching. Thought about swimming, but decided against it since I didn't have a towel with me and my heat was still 20 minutes away.
Swim
  • 18m 16s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 26s / 100 meters
Comments:

Wanted to basically go slow. I always start too fast, then gasp for air. The start went well. Typical stuff of swimming into people, but I did ok. Out and back course is great since you only have to go around one buoy. Navigation was ok, didn't feel like I got off track that much. Mostly did 2 strokes, then breathe, which irritates me.
What would you do differently?:

Should have done more 3 stroke breathing. Also, should have picked up the pace near the end. Should not have bumped into a buoy (which had 3 people holding on to it).
Transition 1
  • 04m 38s
Comments:

I just walked to the bike. Was happy to survive the water since it has been a long time. Couldn't find my socks (duh) so I rode barefoot. Actually liked it.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe pick up the pace a bit next time. Should have dried off more since it took to long to get my shirt on.
Bike
  • 54m 19s
  • 17 miles
  • 18.78 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty satisfied overall, 18 mph is pretty good. Passed a lot of people on the bike.
Chain fell off going up a hill due to stupid shifting. Took me a minute to fix it. It was nice of the one guy to say he was sorry it happened.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, was happy with the bike. Don't try to go from 11th gear to 2nd in one shift while going up a hill. Liked riding barefoot.
My odometer was not set and ready to go. I either need to remember to do this, or leave it off the bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

Dismounted to early. Walked bike in, could have picked up pace more.
What would you do differently?:

Don't dismount early.
Run
  • 31m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

No secret this is a weakness, so not really upset about results. Didn't cramp up at all which was good. My foot didn't fall asleep which is usually a problem. Stayed nice and steady. Liked the course since I couldn't really tell how far I had gone or what was coming up. Not running on concrete is a luxury.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on the run. Seems like speed is limited by lack of speed training, body just isn't used to it. I'll say below average for run, but really wasn't dissapointed in my performance since it was what I expected.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a bit, got some bread.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, but that's ok, it's been a long time and happy to complete this. I wasn't as misserable I as I usually feel during a race and despite lack of training time, actually felt better.
I need to lose some more weight. Althoug I've lost about 15 pounds to 185, another 10 would make a big difference.

Event comments:

I liked this race. The swim start is great and the out and back course is ideal (only 1 turn). Traffic on the bike was annoying since in some places cars were sharing the road with us. Run course is great - crushed gravel trail through the woods and all shaded. Volunteers were in all the right places. Will do this again for sure.
