Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 4:30 a.m. I had trouble turing off the alarm clock because I was slapping at the remote control for the stereo (not a good sign). I can't eat before a race, so only fluids.

Two hour + drive to the race. Got a great parking place and checked in. I pumped up my tires and set up transition area before heading to the swim.
Event warmup:

I swam about 70 yards and joined my wave at the start (that's it).
Swim
  • 11m 49s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

I have done numerous duathlons and road races but never a tri. The numerous open water swims I did as practice paid big dividends. The first 50 yards was rough. I got some scrapes on my left arm and josseled around a bunch but nothing I didn't expect.
What would you do differently?:

Settle into a pace as quickly as possible. Work on bi-laterial breathing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

I was on a grassey area for transition. My feet are sensitive. Some transition set-ups were on concrete and gravel. I'm please with the spot I selected. I rolled up prior to the start and they slid on real easily.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 36m 27s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.75 mile/hr
Comments:

The "rolling hills" killed me. I was passing a lot of people on the flats but some would catch and pass me on the hills. It was a little frustrating.

I kept a higher cadence than I train at. This worked out well. My legs stayed fresh enough to last the race without loosing any real speed.
What would you do differently?:

Train on hills (if I can find some around here).
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Don't remember much about T2. It went well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 31s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

The "brick" part of the run hurt. I felt better at mile 1. I basically settled into the pace and comfort (slight discomfort zone) my body allowed me to run at. I passed quite a few more people than I expected.
What would you do differently?:

Running is my strengh but I need to train more. I could have done better here. The hills were not as big a factor as the bike but still - room for improvement.
Post race
Warm down:

Stood in shade and drank water. I ran 1 mile with my daughter (run leg of kids tri).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills. Sub-standard bike. Weight.

Event comments:

Well organized and fun! This is not a USAT race so drafting, transition rules, etc. were very relaxed. Suprisingly, the athletes did not abuse things. I saw little (if any drafting). The transition zones were kept organized, etc.

The youth race was also excellent and provided an extra incentive to drive the 2 1/2 hours to the race. My daughter competed. It was a great experience for her and a chance to share triathlon with my family. Nice.

The entry fee to this race is cheaper than USAT races in the area. The turn-out was fantastic. The weather was almost perfect. No complaints and I would not recommend any changes for next year. The organizers even had snow-cones for the kids!

The results have not been posted yet. Sorry no splits.
