Swim
Comments: Swim felt good, a little slower on the time then I would normally swim. I think I went pretty wide on the course and had some difficulty passing some people towards the beginning. Otherwise everything felt good, and I felt faster than what my time reflects. Our wave start was also a little confusing, people were walking in the water, and some (like me) were still out of the water when they blew the horn to start. What would you do differently?: Try to sight better, and don't start so far in back of the group, or so far toward the outside of the group. Transition 1
Comments: I will eventually need better shoes for the bike, I threw them on before grabbing the bike, and had to mess with the straps a bit to get them on correctly. Otherwise transition wasn't too slow. What would you do differently?: Get better shoes, and have them clipped in from the beginning. Go Barefoot. Bike
Comments: Bike went pretty well overall. 3 laps (mostly in the street) around the park area...much more up and down hill then my previous two triathlons What would you do differently?: I probably could have pushed a little harder, but was reluctant due to my calves cramping up right off the bike on my first two triathlons. Transition 2
Comments: While my time wasn't bad, it could have been better. The race organizers were hollering for people to get off the bike before getting into transition, and there was a little bottleneck of people in front of me trying to get off their bikes. What would you do differently?: I forgot to unstrap my shoes ahead of getting off the bike, so I could run without them into transition, actually started to unstrap one, so it was loose when jogging with them in transition. Didn't add a lot of time to my transition, but I could have been better organized. Run
Comments: The run is still the toughest event for me, but I felt much better on this run then the last two triathlons. While I have a tough time saying I felt great right off the bike I definitely felt better than previous times (and no cramping in the calfs)...this is one of (if not my best) 5k time so far, so I'm really pleased with how it went. I was pacing with a guy in my age group, and was planning on blowing by him at the end, but he did a great job picking up the pace at the 3 mile mark, so it foiled my plans :) What would you do differently?: Train harder and run faster... Post race
Warm down: walked it off, went to transition, chatted with Kurt, got something to eat and checked the results What limited your ability to perform faster: Not a lot of limitations. I felt pretty good before and after this race, possibly had a little in the tank yet, but I felt I kept a good pace on all 3 events. Event comments: Race was good, and I enjoyed running on the crushed limestone trail. Lake was nasty dirty, compared to others I have been in. Bike course was good and organized, but I found it a little difficult to get into a good pace with the ups and downs of the hills. Overall a fun race with a lot of good competitors. Got up at 4:30 am, wife and I loaded the kids up in the car and took off. Set up bike and stuff in transition. Ate part of a powerbar. And forgot any fuel to take on the bike, and forgot a water bottle, which I was fortunate Kurt helped me out with both :)
Swam out to the first buoy and back....jogged back to the transition area.
